East High School Suns are on their way up the Wisconsin state rankings

WEST BEND, Wis. — The East High School Suns basketball team finished their 2020-21 season with nine wins, 16 losses and a 36% win percentage. This did not hold them back from recovering and working hard during the offseason, which is why they have started the 2021-22 season with a great run and they are already on the track of having a higher than 50% win percentage before the playoffs.

It is a fact that the Suns were one of the worst teams in their region last year, finishing at the sixth place of their league with a record of six wins and 10 losses in their region of North Shore.

This ranked them at No. 224 in Wisconsin and gave them no hope for earning a top-100 spot. However, the boys out of West Bend never gave up.

As the West Bend East basketball social media account tweeted on July 8, the team put in a lot of practice during the summer.

Under the coaching of Andrew Wojcik, the players have worked on a new way of understanding the game, developed their basketball IQ and worked as a team.

Coach Wojcik is a person who has been around the basketball courts of Wisconsin for a while, either by playing or coaching in different teams.

The Suns have developed the ability to work together, possessing the team spirit and chemistry to secure precious wins throughout the season’s first seven games. That is what led to the current 71% win percentage and an overall 5-2 record for the early season run before Christmas break.

In the North Shore district, they are 4th, with four wins and two losses. They are now sitting on a three-game winning streak, with the last battle being against Grafton High School.

The results of the work that the Suns have put in are evident. They have only lost two times during the early start of the season. The first loss came on Dec. 3 against the Port Washington Pirates. This was a surprising defeat for the Suns, considering that the Pirates had never won a game and their first win came in their neutral conference game by the score of 49-45.

In their own neutral conference game, their second loss occurred against the Homestead Highlanders on Dec. 10. The Highlanders were coming into the game at a perfect 100% win percentage and they continued their undefeated record with a final score of 62-53 against the Suns. The Highlanders have yet to lose during the season. They are first in the North Shore district with a 6-0 overall record.

When it comes to the state rankings, the Suns have managed to overturn the last season spot that they acquired at No. 224. With a 6-2 record, they are sitting at No. 148 in the Wisconsin rankings so far this season.

They are facing off soon against the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions for an away nonconference game. This is a substantial crush test for the Suns who want to stay in shape during Christmas break and continue their good season.
