Head coach Abigail Rehfuss continues to excel on the lacrosse field

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Siena women’s lacrosse head coach Abigail Rehfuss has seen all sides of the sport, as she once played lacrosse for Loyola Maryland and now coaches a successful program at Siena.

Rehfuss, a native of the Loudonville area, comes from a long background of athletic family members. Her grandfather played Division I basketball at Siena College, earning an induction into their hall of fame. Rehfuss’ father, Steve, was a two-time Ironman triathlon participant and swam for the University of Albany. Her little sister Caroline followed in her footsteps as a Division I lacrosse player, playing for Princeton University.

Rehfuss made a name for herself during her high school career at Shaker High School in Latham, New York. She not only earned four letters in lacrosse, but also three in soccer, as she was an asset on the field. Rehfuss collected several more accolades in lacrosse as an All-American, All-Star and honors player.

During her college career at Loyola University Maryland, she immediately proved her talent on the field as a freshman. Rehfuss led her team in assists and was ranked 10th in the Big East. She was second on her team for points, goals and shots. During her sophomore year, she started in 17 games and was named to the All-Big East second team after completing the same record in goal, points and shots as she did her first year. Rehfuss scored her 100th career point in her junior year and continued to dominate team records.

Rehfuss’ success on the lacrosse field didn’t end after college. She continued the sport as the coach for her alma matter, Shaker High School. She guided the Blue Bison to the class A championship and was named Times Union Coach of the Year. Rehfuss wanted to continue her success locally but at a higher level and join the Siena Saints team.

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to join the Siena family,” Rehfuss said. “Being from Latham, I’ve both followed and been a supporter of Siena athletics my entire life. I’m eager to get started.”

She is now entering her fourth season as the head coach of the Siena Saints women’s lacrosse team and is the all-time leader in win percentage for both the school’s program and the entire MAAC Conference.

Aside from the Saints’ shortened season in 2020, Rehfuss led the team to several nonconference victories, earning them a spot as No. 2 in the nation.

With the 2022 season quickly approaching, Rehfuss looks to continue the Saints’ run of MAAC championship appearances this spring. The Saints will open their season against New Hampshire on Feb. 12.
