Minster Wildcats football will look to Whiting for strong future

MINSTER, Ohio — The Minster Wildcats hired former Alliance High School football coach Seth Whiting to lead this season’s football program. Whiting put together five successful seasons at Alliance, posting an overall record of 30-23. The Aviators football program made the Ohio state high school playoffs four times during his tenure.

Whiting knew that taking over the Minster Wildcats would be challenging. Press Pros caught up with Seth Whiting before the season started, and the new Wildcats head coach had this to say about the program.

“Program-wise, Geron left it in a good place,” Whiting said. “I’ve been to places where I had to create culture, and I don’t have to create a culture here. We’re more talented than I expected. But we have a lot of work to do. So every day, I tell the kids to let people talk about everyone else in the league; we’ll work in the dark. Then when the lights come on, that’s our time.”

Minster has had a ton of talented teams in recent years. Whiting knows that turning around the program isn’t going to happen in one season. When he took the job, he knew it was a work in progress, and Whiting wants to take the Wildcats back to the success they once had.

Minster kicked off their season at home against Fort Loramie. The Wildcats had a tough time getting things going and lost its home opener 40-7. Minster bounced back with a win on the road against the Columbus Crusaders in Week 2.

Whiting’s team split their non-conference games and headed into conference play sitting at 1-1. The Wildcats kicked off Midwest Athletic Conference play at home against St. Henry. Minster’s defense surrendered 40 points to the Redskins, and the Wildcats lost their second home game 40-28.

Minster finished their 2021-22 season losing seven straight games against conference opponents. The Wildcats were outscored 368-133 by opponents this season and failed to win a home game. This season, Alex Frimel, Nate Oldiges, and Brogan Stephey earned MAC Honorable Mention honors.

The Minster Wildcats finished its season with 715 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns on 286 attempts, which was last in the MAC. Minster successfully threw the ball, finishing second in the MAC with 1,653 passing yards. The Wildcats finished ninth in the MAC in total yards per game this season.

On defense, Minster gave up an average of 348.60 total yards to opposing teams. The Wildcats secondary surrendered 1,567 passing yards and 15 touchdowns. Opponents were averaging 36.80 points per game against the Wildcats this season.

The Minster Wildcats football team finished the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 1-9 and an 0-8 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. For the first time since 2007 and 2008, the Wildcats recorded back-to-back losing seasons. The Midwest Athletic Conference had three teams make it to the state championship game, and two out of the three schools won state championships.

Seth Whiting had a rough first season as head coach, but he knew this wasn’t a sprint to success. The Minster Wildcats are in good hands under Whiting and will regain their winning ways.
