Redshirt freshmen Tyrell Grayson named 2021 Hero Sports freshmen All-American
ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dixie State University Trailblazers ended the season on a promising note. Their second to last game they beat Fort Lewis 62-21 which was their biggest and only win of the season.
The Trailblazers not only finished the season on a good note but they also have an emerging athlete on their hands. A 6-foot, 175-pound defensive back from Fresno, California is an absolute phenom on the gridiron.
Tyrell Grayson was recently named an All-American as a redshirt freshmen making him the fourth player in Dixie State University history to accomplish this achievement. Not to mention he also was selected for the second team All-Western Athletic Conference.

The physical defensive back played in all 11 games and started in 10 of them which says a lot about Grayson as a player with only being a freshman in FCS Division I football. He finished the season with a total of 103 tackles and 79 of those tackles being solo. Grayson led the FCS in solo tackles and was tied for No. 26 in total tackles as a defensive back.
During the season Grayson recorded a team-high five double-digit tackle games including a spectacular night against UC Davis. Grayson had 19 tackles and 15 of those were solo, which means it was a physical game for him and he was dedicated to stopping anyone that ran or caught a pass his way.
Grayson finished off the season with two interceptions, three forced fumbles and five pass break ups. With Grayson being 6-foot and weighing 175 pounds, he is able to run with any receiver down the sideline no matter the size or quickness. Grayson has an ability to ballhawk and use his great hands to shift a game entirely. One can always count on him to come through and make a big play because he is just that good.
The defensive back position is the hardest position on the football field because not only does a defender have to cover numerous positions and zones but they have to be able to make tackles out in the open field. Grayson has certainly shown how versatile he is but also he has shown how great of an athlete he is by being able to do more than one thing on the field.
The overall aspect of this young phenom is that he has more time to develop even more skills to add to his game. Grayson being a redshirt freshmen will definitely benefit the trailblazers team for years to come.
Grayson joins a set of program members who have accomplished this milestone such as: punter Mike Langston (2009), two-time consensus All-American tight end Joe Don Duncan (2011 and 2013) and last but not least All-American punter Josh Carlson (2018).
