Beavercreek HS softball looks to inaugurate softball field for Spring 2022 season

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio — Beavercreek High School Softball is an organization that you may not have heard much about in the last 25 years, considering before last season in 2021, the last time the softball team had made any noise within the community was winning the GWOC Conference in 2009. Before that, they won a District Champion title in 1992 and a Regional Champion title in 1983.

Although you may not have heard much from them success wise since then, the program has been consistently working to improve overall talent, game knowledge, and growing the sport of softball among the community.  The team’s efforts finally came to light publicly last year, when the varsity squad advanced to the Regional Championship for the first time since 1983, losing 5-3 to Lakota West.

There were many other firsts for the team and records broken last year, including Beavercreek being recognized in the Top 10 for the first time in the State Coach’s Ranking Poll in two out of five weeks. Then freshman Haley Ferguson recorded a single season GWOC strikeout record (281) and then junior Shelby Metzger and Haley Ferguson were named to All-Ohio State teams.  It was also the first time that the talk of putting a softball field on a school campus potentially became a reality.

Through ten-plus long years of fundraising, and with guidance and assistance of administrators, Booster Club Vice President Linda Elmore and parents of the team, the idea of building a field started to become a reality.  The team experienced some frustrations last year when playing at a local park with field availability, game attendance and just overall morale, despite the team’s success.  It was evident that the move to the high school would make a world of difference and mean a world of difference to the players and community.  The field was moved off campus about 21 years ago, when renovations and additions had been made to the current building.  The local park delivers great fields, crew, and support.  It provides struggles for school attendance at games, concession stand opportunities, and camp/field usage opportunities for the program.

“After the success of last season, different donors just started falling into place,” Varsity head coach Megan Barrett said. “The idea of it being a possibility, turned into a quick reality, and we could not be more thrilled and excited for the opportunity.”

Several donors including Pinnacle Architects, Bilbrey Construction, Beavercreek Fastpitch Association with the help of Mr. and Mrs. McPeak, The Ott Family, James Investment Research, All Star Fence, Beck Law, Tony Ramsey with Elite Chimney Solutions & Masonry, Mr. Joseph Jenkins, upcoming politician and local business owner of Jenkins Community Development, and many others have been pivotal in the implementation of this project. It would not be possible without them.  However, the program efforts to raise funds have been gallant, but are not done yet.  With one of their larger supporters pulling out in the beginning of fall, the softball program is in need of more donors to assist in finishing the project.

“We are so close to finishing up funding for this project and making it a reality for the start of our Spring season in 2022,” Barrett said. “Construction has already begun, and we are hopeful that with the help of a few more donors, we will be set to finish up the field and have it ready for play this season.”

This hard working program has consistently worked to prevail and always working to get better.  While the program’s game has improved, they look forward to feeling good and building a field worthy of 25 years of growth and who knows what’s to come after that… maybe a state championship?
