El Dorado XC team captain Eva Bond concludes a stellar high school running career

YORBA LINDA, Calif. — Cross country is a sport that involves extensive running for long distances and requires a tremendous amount of endurance. However, the biggest challenge is overcoming the mental barriers above anything else. It doesn’t matter how athletic you are, or how much training you put in, self-doubt will crush your dreams and goals before the training even begins. Every day you need to work hard, run with a purpose, and push through those mental barriers.

For 17-year-old Eva Bond, it is important to be in the right mindset before races, to have a plan and a goal time, and to be confident. She started competitively running at the varsity level her sophomore year at El Dorado High School. She not only runs cross country, but also participates in track and field. During her first year running, Bond received the Newcomer of the Year award and credits her two coaches, Margaret Human and Austin Human, for all her continued success due to their commitment and coaching expertise. Her junior year she received the MVP award for setting a season record of 19:02, being the No. 2 junior in the North Hills League and the No. 5 EDHS junior of all time. She also received the Terry Conley Golden Hawk award as well as the Varsity Distance Runner of the Year award in track and field.

This season as a senior and varsity team captain, Bond medaled in every single race. In the end she placed No. 1 at the Corona Del Mar 5K race and finished her season with a personal record of 18:30 and placed No. 3 in league finals. She is also a three time Scholar Athlete in both cross country and track and field.

Bond is proud to be a part of such an encouraging and supportive team. And although every race is individual, they train together as teammates and depend on one another. It has taught her the importance of working together and pushes her to be the best she can be.

“I love how cross country pushes you beyond your limitations that you never thought were possible,” Bond said.

Win or lose, she knows that every race is a unique experience and there is always something she can learn from. She stays motivated by the saying, “Shoot for the moon, if you fail you will land among the stars.”

In addition to Bond’s amazing athletic accomplishments, she has also received many awards for her academic achievements. Most notable are her 4.2 GPA and four-time Collegiate Scholar awards. She is also a part of the EDHS choral music program and sings with the advanced women’s ensemble. Outside of school she enjoys reading, watching movies, organizing, shopping, and spending time with family and friends.

Currently, Bond is looking forward to high school graduation and preparing for college. She plans on attending Santiago Canyon College then later transferring to a UC, where she will pursue a major in the field of genetics and biotechnology. She hasn’t decided whether she wants to run competitively in college yet, but says she will continue running, as it has become a big part of her life. Bond aspires to compete in future races and hopes to eventually participate in marathons.
