Prior Lake HS hockey to represent at Hockey Day Minnesota in year of new opportunities

PRIOR LAKE, Minn. — For the Prior Lake High School hockey team, the new year means more opportunities. While the rest of us are looking for the number 2022 on our calendars, the team members will be hoping for their own numbers on the scoreboard. With this group of talented athletes, that scoreboard is sure to be generating some high-fives! First up in January is a much-anticipated event.

“The team will be representing the community at Hockey Day Minnesota in Mankato on January 22,” said Chuck Dueber, President of the Blue Line Club for the past three years. “This is a huge deal as there is only one game a year and will be televised on Bally Sports North.”

Chuck’s position with the Blue Line Club gives him opportunities to support the high school hockey team through fundraisers and by hosting special events. The fundraising goal is to help with the annual purchase of items such as needed equipment, tournament expenses, as well as wish list items from the team and school.

Currently, the team has 37 players with 17 on varsity and the balance on junior varsity,” Chuck said. “A few players will move back and forth, but I would say 14-15 of those players will stay on varsity all year. The senior class this year is strong. We have 11 seniors returning with three being the top scorers the last two years and six others contributing greatly last year.”

A large part of the hockey team’s success is the continuity of the players.

“They have had success as a team throughout the youth program, getting to State in the Peewee and Bantam divisions. The boys really want to make it to State as the high school program has never done that before. This is the year for them to do it!”

Chuck Dueber has high praise for the entire team, and he shares some insights about several players.

This year’s seniors are: Will Schumacher, Alex Bump, Sam Rice, Riley Dueber, Justin Kingery, Jackson Anderson, Justin Simonson, Trevor Boschee, Richard Carsten, Tanner Lykken and Blake Dicke.

  • Captain Alex Bump has been heavily recruited and played in the USHL Junior league prior to coming back for senior season and has already committed to a Division 1 school, Vermont University.
  • Captain Will Schumacher, active team leader in career points, is being recruited and also played junior hockey prior to coming back for senior season. He hopes to play Division 1 hockey as well but is currently uncommitted.
  • Riley Dueber wants to play junior hockey after high school as well.
  • Trevor Boschee is a three-year starter in nets; he is looking to play junior hockey after high school and is the all-time career leader in wins and shout outs.

“I believe this is the year for Prior Lake and I will not be surprised if there are big wins in their future,” Chuck said.
