Lyla Ambrose will continue her softball career at University at Buffalo

FAWN GROVE, Pa. — Ed Lynch just happened to be watching the University of Buffalo play on ESPN when he had an idea.

Lynch called 5-foot-10 catcher Lyla Ambrose, who played for Lynch of the Lady Dukes Lynch 18U softball team, and said he may have an idea for where she can go to school.

“I was sitting here last March watching Buffalo on ESPN and thought Lyla was better than the catcher Buffalo had,” Lynch said. “We contacted the school and sent them a video when she was a junior. They ended up coming down here and offering her a scholarship.”

Lynch has seen a major change in how recruiting is conducted these days. Technology has become a major factor in exposing coaches to athletes.

Ambrose has played club softball with the Maryland Legends since she was 12.

“She’s big, strong and throws the ball hard,” Lynch said. “She’s a smart player.”

Ambrose had a strong junior season, being named Division III Catcher of the Year by area coaches. Her high school, Kennard Dale, finished 18-3 last season and won the York-Adams League Division III Championship.

The Rams entered the District III Class 4A playoffs at the No. 2 seed. Kennard Dale would end up being upset by Eastern York in the first round 6-3. The game went into extra innings.

Lynch said he would like to see Ambrose continue to add strong and more polish to develop into a Division I player.

“I think when you get there, most of the kids are trying to figure out whether you belong or not,” Lynch said. “You want to assess the competition and see if you fit in. Lyla is big, strong and smart and she does what she is supposed to.”
