Granbury Pirates finish 2021 football season with plenty of promise

GRANBURY, Texas — After suffering a four-game losing streak mid-season, the Granbury Pirates football team ended the year with a 77-6 victory in a conference game over Saginaw.

Although the year started off with a loss against Paschal High School, Granbury would establish a rhythm early on in 2021, rifling off three straight wins immediately after.

One of those wins came against Crowley High School, one of Granbury’s district opponents. The Pirates played absolutely flawless football, dominating the Eagles by of score of 49-28. Granbury produced 427 yards of total offense, with two touchdowns through the air to go along with four rushing touchdowns.

Granbury also played solid, complimentary football against University High School during their three-game win streak. The Pirates trounced the Trojans, putting up 56 points on over 500 yards of offense. The standout player was Granbury senior wide receiver Gus Hamlin, who finished the game with seven catches, three touchdowns and 100 receiving yards.

After three straight dominant wins, Granbury would unfortunately succumb to a four-game losing streak.

Granbury’s most lopsided loss came against a stout Northwest Texans High School football team – a game in which the Pirates’ defense surrendered 530 yards of offense. Granbury would lose by of score of 66-14, finishing the game with a mere 2.9 yards per rush and only two offensive touchdowns.

However, Granbury would finally end their losing streak against Arlington Heights High School in an at-home district game. Offensively, the Pirates were simply unstoppable, sourcing 10 total touchdowns with seven different players finding the end zone.

Granbury then finished the season strong with a stellar performance against another district opponent. In their final game of the year against Saginaw High School, the Pirates continued to run up the score while limiting the Rough Riders 159 yards of offense. The final score was a whopping 77-6.

Granbury would end its season with a record of 5-5, but the team had several bright spots, which includes several key offensive contributors.

Senior quarterback Austin Jinkerson threw for 1,918 passing yards to go along with 289 rushing yards and 31 total touchdowns. His quarterback rating was 107.2, which is exceptionally high.

Sophomore running back Jadon Rogers also made a huge impact on the field, rushing for 1,115 yards while averaging 8.0 yards per rush attempt and scoring 10 touchdowns. He averaged more than 120 yards rushing per game and finished the year with 134 receiving yards.

Although Granbury had its ups and downs during the 2021 season, they certainly have a foundation in place that they can continue to build upon.
