Last season was a spectacular season with countless wins, namely a 2021 U SPORTS National Championship where the Griffins were the best in the nation. In a game against Trinity Western, the Griffins won 3-2. This marked the first national championship won by the university since they joined U Sports in 2014.
“I just know all the work these girls have put in and all the girls that came before them,” Dean Cordeiro, women’s soccer head coach, said. “That’s what we can’t forget. So many people have left their fingerprints all over the program and to be standing as the top team in the country, in all of U SPORTS today, is a very proud moment and a memory we’ll never forget our whole lives.”

That’s one of the highlights of the past soccer season for the Griffins. But it’s not the only one. During the past academic year, countless students won athletic honors. Three of these students were from the women’s soccer team. Samantha Gouveia, Kaylin Hermanutz and Breanna Truscott all received honors after leading the team to the first U SPORTS National Championship.
They’re not the only athletes who deserve acknowledgement from the past year. The student athlete of the month during the championship time period was Grace Mwasalla.
“As the Griffins celebrated a historic U SPORTS national championship on Nov. 21, the first in MacEwan’s history, Mwasalla was front and centre in the efforts,” an article published by MacEwan athletics explains.
