Colton Sandage surpasses 1,000 career points at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois’ star guard, Colton Sandage, achieved something that all basketball players wish for: the 1,000th point scored in his collegiate career. After two seasons in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) where he played for Vincennes University and won the 2019 NJCAA Division I National Championship, he then transferred to Western Illinois.

In his junior and senior (current) seasons at Western Illinois, he improved on his shooting percentages and his points per game (ppg). At the moment, Sandage is averaging 14.5 points while shooting 43.9% from the field. In the team’s 17 games, they have an 11-6 record and are very much alive in the Summit League Conference and could make a run in the conference tournament.

In the 16th game, the 6-foot-2 guard scored his 1,000th career point after completing both of his free throws.

“After going 2-2 from the line, Sandage has officially surpassed 1,000 points scored in his collegiate career,” the team’s twitter page tweeted.

“Blessings man! Wasn’t even close to this in high school. Thank you for the opportunity,” Sandage replied.

For a player who had to rise through the ranks following his prep career at Bloomington High School, beginning in junior college to reaching Division I basketball, Sandage has created a name for himself at the highest level.

He is an efficient scorer and someone who shoots 40% from the field is most likely to succeed anywhere they play, but the “X-factor” that sets players like Sandage apart is his ability to communicate with his teammates and coaches.

“We have some really good scorers on this team,” Sandage said. “If there’s a loose ball, I’m always going to be the first one to the floor to try and get the ball.” This attitude is what builds chemistry which can ultimately lead to success.

Success for a team like Western Illinois would be to go on a late season run, win their conference championship and earn a spot in the March Madness tournament. Most likely being in the 12/13 seeded range; a team that averages 39% shooting is primed for an early round upset in the end-of-season tournament.

Sandage is not currently projected to be get drafted in the 2022 NBA Draft following his senior season, but an impressive stretch to end this year that could potentially birth a postseason appearance would be something this efficient shooter could capitalize on.
