Rhys Travis is jumping to Colorado State University

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Over the past four years, Rhys Travis has been on the Poudre High School track team. Ever since he was eight years old, he has had the dream to compete at the high school level and win a state championship. Now, he is only months away from competing at the Division I level.

Travis has always been a good athlete, but that was no surprise since his father won the San Diego track state championship three separate times. He grew up listening and watching his family compete and wanted to do the same.

“I started competing in track when I was in third grade, around eight years old,” Travis said. “Track is a sport that runs in my family.”

Having this type of competition inside his household must have made it very easy for Travis to learn how to compete in his events. He received knowledge from his parents, sister and brother. This would ultimately give him the step above the competition that he needed. Having mentors and important people around changes the way someone can prepare.

“I look up to my older brother and sister, along with my mom and dad,” Travis said. “They have always been super supportive of me, and I know I make them proud on the track.”

With his support system behind him, one can see why Travis is so special on the track. His specialty is jumping. The man can leap into the air like nobody else. This was obvious during his high school career.

“My biggest high school accomplishment so far is winning two state titles in the high jump and triple jump,” Travis said. “I also set the school record for triple jump. I think the amazing people I have met along the way is an accomplishment too.”

This young man is special, both on the track and off. He knows what matters and gives his best effort in everything that he does. He is the definition of a true student-athlete.

When Travis isn’t dominating the track, he is on the hardwood for Poudre’s basketball team.

“Competing in track and basketball at Poudre High School has been awesome,” Travis said. “The coaches are top-notch, and they have been instrumental in my development as an athlete as well as a person. I would not be half the athlete I am today if it were not for them.”

As his senior year is slowly coming to an end, Travis must start shifting his focus to Colorado State University (CSU). He will be joining their track team this upcoming fall and will be looking to contribute to the team early on in his career.

He is very excited to be going there.

“I chose Colorado State University because it has always been my dream school,” Travis said. “I grew up a Ram fan, attending sporting events my entire life. When Coach Bailey first texted me, I thought it was awesome that my dream school wanted me to compete for them.”

Having the opportunity to play for the school that you have been watching since you were little is an athlete’s dream.

“I cannot wait to be a part of a top-tier team with the staff of Coach Bedard and Coach Bailey, as well as the people on the team,” Travis said. “I am looking forward to continuing to work to become a better athlete at CSU while creating more friendships.”

Make sure to watch for Travis at the Division I level, as he will be doing his best to help CSU win as many events as they can. This young man is special, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him competing and winning in multiple events over his collegiate career.
