The journey of Ryan Segovia, a highly touted college football prospect

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — High school football is a beloved sport. Athletes get four years of unforgettable memories and lessons. But, for a select few across the country, they get to play beyond that at the college level.

One of those select few who will continue their journey is Ryan Segovia, a Bear Creek High School senior in Lakewood. Segovia has had an outstanding career at Bear Creek and has been pivotal to this year’s Bear Creek team.

Segovia’s journey started over nine years ago. He didn’t immediately take to football as many people would assume.

“I thought football looked silly, and the shoulder pads made kids look funny,” Segovia said. “I was the ‘stay inside and play Minecraft all day’ type of kid. But one day, I decided I wanted to give football a shot.”

He started his football journey with the Bear Creek Junior Sports league, playing under his father, and immediately fell in love.

Segovia’s father has been integral to Segovia’s success.

“He motivated me to do my best,” Segovia said. “He supported me, playing any position and even supported me in the decision to stop playing, had I chosen that.”

Beyond Segovia’s father, the rest of his family has also been integral in his football career.

“I have always had my mom’s support; nobody can make me feel better after a loss,” Segovia said. “Also, my little sisters Natalie and Lauren started up a cheer team for me and continued that through high school.”

Family is a true lifeline for Segovia. But one other person has been so crucial to his success; Coach Matthew Steinfeldt. Coach Steinfeldt was Segovia’s high school head coach and has been extremely influential in two years of working together. They have created an inseparable bond.

“The one coach that has helped me grow as a man and into a great player is Coach Steinfeldt,” Segovia said. “He took a struggling program and turned it into a winning program, with, more importantly, a lot of really amazing young men. I hope one day to coach with Coach Steinfeldt and my dad to help change young kids’ lives like they did mine.”

Coach Steinfeldt has also reciprocated that same respect for Segovia.

“Ryan is a great young man that worked diligently as a leader to help us build success in our first two years together,” Steinfeldt said. “He is going to go on to college and have a solid career at the next level.”

Segovia’s on-the-field success has not come without obstacles, however. In Segovia’s sophomore year, he broke his leg, effectively ending his sophomore campaign. But he worked very hard to rehab, and through sheer determination, he was able to overcome that injury.

“The memory I will remember the most is beating Windsor my senior year,” Segovia said. “I was back on the field, on almost the exact date of the injury. I had the best game of my life, rushing for over 250 yards. I will forever remember the feeling of hugging my family for overcoming that obstacle in my life.”

Segovia has learned some critical lessons that he will carry with him as he moves on to the collegiate level.

“The most important lesson I have learned is to truly trust the process and not give up,” Segovia said. “Working out day after day, you don’t see many changes, but if you do it for long enough, you will see changes. Good things will come to those who not only wait but also work hard.”

For Segovia, all of the countless hours he has put in has led to one consistent dream, getting to play football in college.

“I have gotten to go on many game-day visits, and I have fallen in love with CSU Pueblo,” Segovia said. “I have an official visit soon and hope to sign on national signing day. I couldn’t be happier to live out my long-time dream and play football close to home in the RMAC (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference).”

At CSU Pueblo, Segovia is being recruited as a traditional fullback, which is very rare to see nowadays.

“I am very blessed to have found a program that still utilizes a fullback,” he said.

Segovia plans to major in either business or kinesiology while also completing a 3/2 program. He also has objectives for his football career.

“I want to make an impact early on,” Segovia said. “I will redshirt my freshman year, and I will do whatever it takes to get on the field and make an impact. I want to make the best of the next five years of my life playing the sport I love and getting a degree.”

Segovia is an up-and-coming athlete. It will be exciting to see what the future holds for him.
