South Fort Myers’ Addison Potts is putting on a show her senior year

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Only seven percent of high school athletes choose to continue playing their sport in college – regardless of the level of play.

Senior girls basketball player Addison Potts is one of them, and she’s making the most of both her high school and future collegiate career. She signed her national letter of intent in November to play for the Boilermakers at Purdue University as part of the Class of 2022.

“I chose Purdue because it felt very much like home,” Potts said. “They welcomed me like I was a part of their family.”

Potts had originally verbally committed to Missouri on March 27, 2018, when she was in eighth grade, after touring plenty of schools and receiving nine scholarship offers. It wasn’t until after July of 2021 when she decommitted from Missouri, formally reopening her recruitment just before the start of her senior year.

“After discussing with my family and following my heart, I have decided to reopen my recruitment,” Potts wrote in a Tweet back in July 2021. “I want to thank Coach Pingeton along with all the coaches and staff at Mizzou women’s basketball for your belief in me. I have great trust in my future, and I am excited to see where my next path takes me.”

Shortly after the Tweet, Potts verbally committed to Purdue University, announced it on social media and signed a few months later.

“I’m excited to learn and develop my game for Coach Geralds and her staff,” Potts said. “And playing in front of their amazing fans.”

For Potts, basketball is her life. She started 10 years ago when her father and grandfather registered her for an all-boys league.

“I just fell in love with the game as soon as I started,” she said.

Along with playing club basketball, Potts had played at Elevation Prep her freshman year, at Bishop Verot High School during her sophomore year and then at Seffner Christian Academy during her junior year, where she scored the 2,000th point of her career on Feb. 4, 2021. She has been playing varsity basketball since seventh grade.

Potts transferred one last time to South Fort Myers High School, just down the street from her home, to play her last season of high school basketball. She enrolled in South because she was interested in playing for head coach BJ Edwards. The two had built a strong relationship as he trained her over the summer. Potts also wanted to help put South on the map.

The 6-foot-0 point guard was looking for a strong start to her senior season with the Wolfpack. It arrived on Dec. 2, 2021, when Potts surpassed the 850 career varsity rebounds, the first of many accomplishments during her time as part of the Wolfpack.

On Jan. 12, Potts was nominated to the McDonald’s All-American Games, which will be hosted in Chicago in March 2022.

“It felt great to see all my hard work pay off,” Potts said. “I am very blessed for these opportunities.”

In addition to that, the senior guard made the All-Tournament team at the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational Tournament. She finished three games with 66 points.

Potts was also named MVP of the fourth annual New Year’s Howl Championship. She finished the championship game against Mariner High School with a leading 24 points to help South Fort Myers win 66-30.

Even with all of the accolades that Potts has earned, she said the most memorable thing would be her teammates.

“Building relationships that are going to last,” she said. “That’s what I’ll remember the best.”

As Potts finishes her senior season, she’s looking to reach 2,500 career points, break the single-game record at South of scoring 41 points and lead her team to win a district championship.
