Yorba Linda boys lacrosse looks to regain Century Conference title

YORBA LINDA, Calif. — COVID-19 turned the world on its head, and, among many other things, made it difficult for high school lacrosse to operate as usual in 2020. Perhaps this played a part in Yorba Linda High School’s boys varsity lacrosse team coming in second in the Century Conference, as opposed to their preferred usual first place.

After a year of pandemic hiatus, the Mustangs took the field with a purpose in the 2021 spring season, losing only two games in their first 10 matchups. However, the boys were ultimately bested in league play by Foothill High School from Santa Anna. Foothill maintained an undefeated (5-0) run in the Century Conference while the Mustangs ended with an unsettling 4-1 record in the league and 12-5 overall.

Although it was an upsetting season near the end from a player perspective, it was still filled with many golden moments. Brock Melanson and Kyle Berg, as well as some other upperclassmen, did not hesitate in front of net and had several games where they scored multiple goals.

The Mustangs also saw a playoff berth in the CIF 2021 Boys Lacrosse Championships. They squared up with Newbury Park in the first round of the tournament that featured 25 teams from across southern California. They comfortably won 13-4 and headed to the second round of 16 teams. Here, they were not as fortunate, and their season was cut short by Palos Verde, who went on to lose in the next round.

The Mustangs are, without a doubt, revving up for the upcoming spring season. Reclaiming the Century Conference will be their number one priority. The conference was established in 2014, and since then, the Mustangs have won the conference, back to back, every year until 2021.

This goal of regaining the conference title is at the heart of head coach Tucker Amidon’s decision making for the Mustangs. Their home opener against Northwood High School is set to take place on Feb. 2.
