Q&A with Cedar Falls HS basketball player Hunter Jacobson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Senior and Cedar Falls Quarterback Hunter Jacobson had his senior year of basketball taken away after a left knee ACL tear at Cedar Rapids Kennedy during football season which shut him down for the remainder of the season. Jacobson averaged five points and three rebounds a game last year for a Cedar Falls team that went undefeated in the regular season before falling to Johnston in the state semi’s. Jacobson would’ve been a key part of the Tigers basketball team this season on both sides of the ball. Although his injury is holding him back from being on the court, it hasn’t stopped him from playing an important role in other ways for the team.

What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?

Hunter Jacobson: A personal goal for me would be to play basketball in college. As well as learn to possibly become a coach one day too.

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

Jacobson: The biggest challenge for me is that I got hurt during football so I wasn’t able to play my senior year. I managed that by going to practice each day and contributing to the team more as a coach than as a player.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Jacobson: A piece of advice I got was from coach Jim Berry about the jump shot. He always preached arch, reach and freeze and if you do those three things you will make a lot of shots.

What do you love about your sport?

Jacobson: I love how you can score in so many ways in basketball and how all kinds of different people can be good players. Also how if you have a really good defensive team, you can win almost any game just from that.

Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?

Jacobson: I personally don’t have one but our team had one last year. We listened to John Wall before every game.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Jacobson: I like to play other sports outside of basketball like football and track. But my favorite thing to do is fish.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Jacobson: Being a part of a team has taught me to be a good leader on the court and off. Also how important teamwork is because without that, you can’t make a good team.

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Jacobson: A mistake I made was a fast-break layup against Dubuque Senior. But I didn’t give up on the game and made a big play in the 2nd quarter to help give our team the momentum again.
