Q&A with Mya Helgason: From Greenall Griffin to Regina Cougar WVB player

REGINA, Saskatchewan — Mya Helgason was a decorated player for the Balgonie Greenall Griffins. A 6’0 Setter playing on an outstanding high school team, it seems she was destined to play for the home-town University of Regina Cougars. She was a star with the U of R Cougar Club team from 14u to 18u and played for Team Sask teams from 2018-2021. Six-foot setters don’t grow on trees and the Cougars are surely ecstatic the White City resident decided to attend University close to home.

We asked Mya a few questions about her experiences as a University Athlete.

What is your biggest challenge being a student-athlete?

Mya Helgason: One of the biggest challenges of being a high-performance athlete is finding balance. The schedules and commitments can be hectic without good time management.  I work really hard at making sure that I keep a bit of time in my schedule for maintaining balance and for doing things that recharge me and keep me feeling positive.

What are some of the things you do outside school and volleyball?

Helgason: In my spare time I love spending time with my family and friends and being outdoors. I also enjoy yoga, writing and photography.

Volleyball is truly a team sport. What has being a member of a team taught you?

Helgason: Being a member of a team has taught me so much. Besides all the amazing, lifelong friendships I have from the teams I have been on, I have also learned about trust, belonging, collaboration and hard work. My teammates are like a second family to me.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?

Helgason: My pre-game routine includes taking time to calm my mind, connecting with my teammates and focusing on our goals for that game. I listen to music, do some meditating and use lots of positive thinking and visualization to go into the match focused and ready.

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or a mentor?

Helgason: Make sure I focus on all parts of myself as an athlete. It’s important to work on your skills and the physical components of the game but it’s also important to work on the mental and emotional side to really get to know yourself as a player.

This well-spoken Cougar rookie is working towards her Bachelor of Education. She was a pretty solid basketball and track athlete in high school but there is no doubt she has found her passion in volleyball. She seems well on her way to success on and off the court!
