Freeland Falcons soar to win Mid American Pompon state championship
FREELAND, Mich. — The Mid American Pompon State Competition took place on Feb. 13 at Eastern Michigan University. The Freeland High School Varsity team came in first place in the Varsity Class B Division, earning them the title of State Champions. After months of preparation, the winter season of pompon in Freeland ended last month with nothing but pride.
This is the fifth time in Freeland High School history that the varsity team was named State Champions, and the stars aligned for the varsity team this year.
“This year the girls found a quote about the number one,” Varsity Coach Kailyn Humphrey said. “It said ‘111 reminder that thoughts create your reality.’ The girls used realized that on our one team, we had one senior and one freshman. We also had 11 girls total on the team. We had 11 stickers that we put in our shoes as good luck. We also performed as not only the first team in our division, but first of the entire afternoon. The numbers just continued to show around us.”
The Freeland Middle School team came in second place in the middle school Division 2 making them the State Champion Runners Up.
“This was the highest our Middle School has ever placed at a state competition, and it was amazing to make history,” Middle School Coach Lexy Weersma said.
The sisterhood shared by the two teams makes these results special for all grade levels. “As coaches we are always proud and we cannot thank these girls enough for being such an amazing group of young ladies,” Kailyn said. “They hold themselves to high standards, are so respectful, and amazing role models. We couldn’t ask for anything more.”
