South Anchorage HS baseball looking to have another undefeated run

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The South Anchorage High School baseball team went undefeated last year, and is looking to repeat as state champions this spring. Coach Taylor Nerland says he’s expecting a number of younger players to step up and get their chance to shine with the Wolverines. The season official begins on March 2nd and will run until school gets out in mid-May. South will likely have enough players trying out to form one varsity and two junior varsity teams. The best place to go for schedules on who is playing when and where is the Alaska Legion site at www.AlaskaLegion.com.

Assistant Coach Matt Sugita notes that several of South’s players have been playing together since they were nine-years-old (in Little League and on a traveling team under Coach Len Story), so they’re a tight bunch who have seen success before and he’d like to see them do it again. Three of South’s top pitchers, Seniors Curtis Hebert, Oliver Brown and Isaac Johnson will be back. MaxPreps recently chose Hebert (who also plays catcher, infield and pitches) as the top baseball player in Alaska for 2022. Hebert has committed to play Division I baseball at the University of Portland after graduation. Brown (shortstop and pitcher) has committed to play Division I baseball at Holy Cross and Johnson (pitcher) will play for Division II Concordia St. Paul in Minnesota.

Nerland says they’re trying to put an emphasis on playing more games this baseball season. The maximum number of games they can play is 22, but many teams traditionally have only played 12 or 13 before they dive into state and regional tourneys that run three-days-in-a-row. The weather may have a lot of impact on how many additional games can be scheduled. South coaches say they expect good competition from Southeast Alaska teams, Wasilla, Palmer and Colony. Eagle River and Service both had very young teams last year, so they expect the majority of last year’s players for those teams will be back. The Wolverines also always have a big rivalry with Dimond and that’s likely to continue.

The South High School and South Legion teams are always looking for more coaches. If anyone is interested in getting involved, they are encouraged to reach out.
