Meet Brett McCarty: Dunedin High’s new baseball coach

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Brett McCarty is the new head coach for Dunedin High School’s Falcons baseball team. The Alabama native said he came to the school for two reasons: the first was the rich tradition of this community and the other was the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on student athletes.

“The moment that I saw the job opening to coach at Dunedin High School, I knew that I wanted to be there,” McCarty said. ”I love the opportunity that I have to influence and lead students and student athletes.”

McCarty is a Birmingham, Alabama native. He is married to wife Bekah McCarty. He has a long history of playing the game. He attended and played baseball at Hewitt Trussville High School in Trussville, Alabama, under head coach Jeff Mauldin. There he competed in a state championship before going on to play baseball at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, under head coach Jason Beck.

His coaching career began assisting an athletic outreach program for children and families in immense poverty in San Jose, Costa Rica. Since then, he has taught high school English and coached baseball at the high school level in Florida along with multiple travel ball organizations out of Alabama and Florida. He loves sports of all kinds, but his true passion is using sports as an avenue to prepare and develop those around him for the future.

“My goal in life is to leave others better than I found them and I am able to do that through the game of baseball by coaching the game I love but also by leading players to become great future husbands, fathers, students, and contributors to their community,” he said.

McCarty believes the most important things that make a successful student athlete is their character and work ethic.

“What happens during a game only shows part of the success, a truly successful student athlete treats those around them with love and respect, values their schoolwork, values the opportunities they have, and is willing to put in the extra work and effort on and off the field to be great,” he said.

In the game of baseball, character is extremely important. Mistakes happen in this game, but the players that are able to work through them with grit, determination, and positivity are the ones who find true success on the field and in life, McCarty asserted.

Dunedin’s boys baseball team is going strong this year, starting a new schedule of lifting early in the mornings and training in the afternoons.

“They have shown that they understand what it means to hustle and work hard, and they will continue to put those values into practice,” said McCarty, adding that aside from ability, one of the most important things for a team that goes far into the playoffs is that they care and love each other.

“Our guys have shown that level of care and continuity this year that I believe leads to success,” he said.
