10-year-old BMX rider loves to learn new tricks on his bike

JACKSON, Mich. —

Darrell Wiginton

Age: 10

Grade: 5th

School: Springport Elementary

Sport: BMX

Fun loving. Laid back. Chill. These are all qualities that make up Darrell Wiginton. Even though BMX isn’t really a team sport, Darrell thinks it’s fun because he can make friends from other schools. His pre-race ritual includes getting his bike ready, putting on his helmet, and making sure his shoes are tied on tightly. The hardest part of BMX racing, for Darrell, is speed. His family built a “pump track” at home so he can practice building his speed. He loves how fast he can ride in BMX, and states it’s fun to learn new tricks on his bike.

The goal is to improve with each race and every practice. “I’ve fallen in a race,” Darrell tells us in his interview,” and it’s embarrassing, but I get back up and finish. That’s what is most important. Always do your best.” Darrell is on track to go to college some day, and hopes there will be a college BMX team by the time he gets there.

Darrell is a 5th grader at Springport Elementary School. Outside of BMX, he likes art, building things with Legos, and traveling. His favorite food are the BBQ wings from Gotham Wings in New Jersey. Although Darrell doesn’t really listen to music while he is getting ready for a race, he does like most pop music.
