Lorne Park SS cross country team welcome all levels of running

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — High school cross country is a fall sport that runs from October to November. At Lorne Park Secondary School, the goal for the team is always to promote activity as well as an appreciation for running and being outdoors.

Coaches Kristina McGregor and Maria Hatzakis have been a part of the cross country running team on and off for 20 years.

“We welcome all levels of running,” states Maria, “and hope that by participating in extracurriculars, students find another means of meeting new people.”

Due to the lack of sports last year, this season saw students eager to participate. “It was also a way for many of them to work on their fitness or improve their running ability,” explains Maria.

The team usually trains from September to November and participates in three cross country meets before the Region of Peel finals.  Athletes have a program warm-up that they perform prior to their race as a team.

Traditionally, the Lorne Park Secondary School Cross Country Running Team has been successful at the Region of Peel finals, with many athletes advancing to the Ontario finals.  To celebrate their accomplishments, the team usually hosts a pizza party where t-shirts are distributed.

This year the Junior boys team (grade 10) won the Region of Peel (ROPSSAA) final and advanced to the Ontario finals (OFSSA) on Nov 6, 2021, in Lakefield.
