The legacy of Texas’ all-time winningest HS football coach Phil Danaher
CALALLEN, Texas — Phil Danaher is known for having one of the most successful high school football programs in the South Texas region, making numerous deep playoff runs and making the state championship game in 2005 and 2016.
The football program was led by head coach Phil Danaher who has the most wins of any high school coach in the state of Texas. When he arrived at Calallen, the football team hadn’t been to a playoff in 29 years, however as of today, the Wildcats hold the longest active streak in playoff appearances in state history.
In 2016, Coach Danaher won his 427th career game to become the winningest Texas high school football coach. One year later, he was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame and finishes his career with 490 victories and 28 district titles.
On Monday, December 13, 2021 Coach Danaher announced his retirement to the community after a coaching career that spanned over 48 years was ending.
Phil Danaher was a successful football coach but he was also successful in so many other ways, husband, father, and mentor to many young men who had the privilege to step out on the field, coach on the sidelines and the students who cheered from the bleachers.
His legacy is not just on the field but for being the strength and pillar to a community who celebrated on Friday nights and celebrated the winning spirit of Calallen Wildcat Football. A man who made us proud to be a parent, student or alumni of the Wildcat family.
He celebrated his accomplishments as a humble man, for his journey was successful with every coach who executed the plan and for every young man who suited up and ran the plays.
It was teamwork that made the dream work. It was believing in a man who commanded the best from himself and those he surrounded himself with.
