BYU T&F star Courtney Wayment wins another indoor national title

PROVO, Utah — It was a moment Brigham Young University’s track and field star, Courtney Wayment, will never forget. Wayment recently became the first track and field athlete to win an individual indoor national title in two different events. For BYU’s storied track and field history, that’s saying something.
“This is my last, first indoor race of my collegiate career. I wanted it to be the last one, best one,” Wayment told ESPN after smashing her personal-best time and capturing the 5,000-meter title in Birmingham, Alabama.

Speaking to ESPN, Coach Dilijeet Taylor said, “She just went a little early, I thought, but it worked out.”

“With 400 to go, coach Taylor said I could go for it,” Wayment told BYU Sports. “I know I have closing speed so it was me want to see if I could create a gap. I didn’t want to lead the race and not win it.”

Wayment comes from a family of runners. Her parents, Mark and Becky, were both on the cross country and track and field teams at Weber State and her four older siblings spent time racing in cross country.

According to Deseret News, Wayment’s mother Becky said that she knew 12 years prior to Wayment’s historic win that she would be very successful in the sport.

Wayment is of the greatest runners in BYU History, but it almost didn’t happen because she spent her time growing up playing soccer. It wasn’t until her sophomore year in high school that she decided to dedicate her time solely to running.

Wayment also took home the 3,000-meter title and anchored the distance medley relay at last year’s NCAA indoor track and field championship to have her name go down in BYU athletic history.

This first-place finish also cemented Wayment’s position as a First Team All-American.
