Garnet Valley HS cheerleaders enjoying every minute of the winning season

GLEN MILLS, Pa. — On January 8, the Garnet Valley High School cheerleaders competed against 29 teams and won the District 1 Championship.

On January 28-29, they were up against 39 teams in the small 3A Division and won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) State Championship.

On February 6, they faced off against 12 teams and won the Central League.

“This is the first time that a Garnet Valley cheerleading team has won Districts, States, and the Central League,” said Lisa Garman, Varsity Cheerleading Coach. “These are the three big championships.”

Bringing Home a Medal

With these three victories under their belt, the GVHS cheerleaders traveled to Orlando, FL, for the National High School Cheerleading Championship, which was held in mid-February. The Game Day Team went up against 36 teams from across the country and placed third and brought home the bronze medal. “It was an extremely close competition and the scoring came down to 2/10ths of a point between gold, silver, and bronze,” Lisa said, adding that the Game Day Team is comprised of 30 cheerleaders, ranging from 9th through 12th grade.

Lisa pointed out that the team attended the national championship two years ago and came in fourth. “Our goal was to do better than we did in 2020, so to come home with the medal was amazing,” she said. “We are super proud of the girls and the year they’ve had. Not only did they nail all of these championships, they cheered for 16 weeks of football season during Coach Ricci’s final season, and it was a great year for the football team. This is a great year to be a Jag.”

Victory Loop

Lisa attributed the winning season to the girls’ willingness to practice. “They came in every day ready to work, and we took it one week at a time,” she said, adding that she is grateful to have such a supportive network of parents and school administrators. “The principal, the vice principal, the athletic director, the football coach — they all come to our competitions and are there on the sidelines giving the girls high fives as they run off the field.”

The high of winning has continued even after the team returned from Florida. “The girls will be getting their state rings soon, and we were interviewed on Fox News, and Representative Craig Williams invited us to the Capitol later this month,” Lisa said. “We’re enjoying every minute of this incredible year.”
