Heritage High School’s star in the making: Lauren Gunn
SAGINAW, Mich. — Lauren Gunn is a senior athlete at Heritage High School. She has been on the varsity basketball team for all four years, and varsity soccer for three years. All while maintaining a GPA of 4.06.
When asked who was her favorite coach and why she said, “I had a travel basketball coach going into my sophomore year I played for Michigan Mystics AAU Basketball his name was Brian.” Gunn went on to say how that AAU coach pushed her to be better and made her believe in herself. “I personally need that motivator to push me,” Gunn said.
Even as a star Gunn still went through challenges and setbacks in her basketball career. Gunn’s sophomore year in the middle of the season she had a shoulder injury and dislocated it.
“About a month later I dislocated it again while I was just at Sports Zone,” Gunn said.
That landed her in the hospital and she was told if she dislocated it again she would probably need surgery. While trying to get her shoulder right with physical therapy so she could get back to the game she loved, COVID-19 hit, and her sophomore season was over.
“The first day of tryouts my junior year I fell and dislocated my shoulder again really bad and I had to get surgery,” Gunn said.
That third injury unfortunately ended her junior year season early, and she had to sit out the rest of the year. But that’s not all for the setbacks after she was two months into being recovered from her shoulder she was playing soccer at Heritage and tore her meniscus. She missed the whole AAU season going into senior year which is the biggest time for recruitments.
Even with all of her setbacks she still kept her positivity through it all, and now she has committed to Arizona Christian University in Glendale, Arizona. There she is looking to go the pre-med route and would hope to become a dermatologist.
Lauren Gunn is a great athlete, and usually averages at least 10-15 points a game and we ask how she does it every game and she says wearing her green “lucky socks” and doing a handshake with her friend Zar’ria Mitchell.
