Q&A with Bloomfield Hills wrestling coach, Regional Coach of the Year Tony Scigliano

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Congratulations to Tony Scigliano who received the prestigious “Regional Coach of the Year” award.  Tony and his coaching staff led the Bloomfield Hills High School wrestling team to have the greatest season in BHHS wrestling history. The wrestling team finished their season 24-1. They remained undefeated in the regular season, won the league and district championships and made it to the regional finals.

I had the opportunity to ask Tony a few questions about his coaching career and what it means to him to be named “Regional Coach of the Year.”

How long have you been a coach at Bloomfield Hills High School?

Tony Scigliano: I took over Bloomfield Hills Andover high school wrestling team in 2008. When the two Bloomfield Hills schools merged in 2014, I was offered the head coaching job of Bloomfield Hills high school, which I accepted.

Why did you become a coach?

Scigliano: The main reason I became a wrestling coach is because I realized how much my former wrestling coach, John Segula, a former wrestling state champion from Bloomfield Hills Lahser in 1980, had effected my life. I figured if he could make that much of an affect on my life, maybe I could impact the newer generation of wrestlers in the same way he did me. He passed away in 2003 at only 40 years old. So I guess you could say I coach to honor him.

What has been your most successful moment as a coach this past year?

Scigliano: This season we had a very successful year, with a final record of 24-1. There were several memorable moments to the season. Finishing in third place in all the teams of Oakland County was very exciting. We also repeated as league champions for the second year in a row. But probably the most exciting moment was when we won the team district championship against Waterford Kettering. It came down to the final two matches, and we had to win them both to win the championship.  Steven Macaj pinned his opponent which gave us a one point lead in the dual meet. Which ever team won the last match, would be district champions. Thankfully, my senior captain, Connor Brandon, went out and he pinned his opponent. My team never seemed more excited than that moment. May have been the most exciting moment in the 14 years I coached at this school.

How did you find out you were named Regional Coach of the Year?

Scigliano: I found out that I was the regional coach of the year at the regional championships which were held two weeks before the state finals. They announced it before the championship matches at the regional finals. I was honored to win that award, since the award is voted on by the opposing coaches from the other teams in your region. So that made that award very special to me.

What does being Regional Coach of the Year mean to you?

Scigliano: The regional coach of the year award really is an award for my entire coaching staff. Kurt Delfin, Wes Graham, Mike Tioran, and Jon Williams are all a part of this award. We have worked very hard for the last few years to get this group of guys to this level.

Anything you’d like to share about the players on the wrestling team?

Scigliano: This year‘s wrestling team had several stand out wrestlers. Jordan Jones, Cole Rodriguez, Justin Tioran, and Connor Brandon were my four captain. Jordan Jones and my heavyweight Allan Spencer both made it to the state finals. The team had 9 wrestlers in the regional championship as well. The team won 5 tournaments this season, including repeating as league and district champions. We were only one match away from making it to the Team State Finals.
