Q&A with Lorne Park Clarkson U8 Gold hockey coach Ryan Dunnigan

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Although this is his first season coaching, Lorne Park Clarkson U8 Gold HC Ryan Dunnigan has played hockey since he was six years old. Coaching during the Covid 19 global pandemic has brought some unique challenges. Many of the plans the coaching staff had for this season needed to be put on hold due to the government restrictions. As players have now been impacted for two straight years, one of Coach Ryan’s priorities has been to ensure the team stays connected during the breaks in play.

What are one or two things that the team does in training that are keys to their success?

Ryan Dunnigan: We ask our players to focus on the process and to challenge themselves to get better in their own development areas rather than focusing solely on the desired outcome.

How do you encourage the team after a disappointing loss?

Dunnigan: After each game, we acknowledge both team and personal areas of improvement regardless of the results on the scoreboard.

Describe your proudest coaching moment.

Dunnigan: Supporting their team to the first win of the season was a proud moment for the players, parents and coaches.

What is the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from being a coach?

Dunnigan: No matter the age, it is important to make things fun for your players. Detailed explanations and structured practice plans are necessary to coordinate the players but, ensuring they are eager to come to the rink and do their best is the most important element in their success and development.

What legacy do you hope to leave as a coach?

Dunnigan: I hope that our players develop a passion for working as a team to achieve shared goals. It is important that kids understand the power that being a good teammate can be, which will serve them well in sports, in school and in life.
