Catching up with Cumberland Valley baseball HC Levi Mumma

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Learn about Cumberland Valley head baseball coach Levi Mumma and his vision for the Eagles.

What is your coaching/teaching background?

Levi Mumma: I have coached baseball at CV since 2003, and I’ve been the head baseball coach since 2014. Until 2018 I coached both football and baseball.

What is your experience playing sports?

Mumma: My entire athletic life has been spent on the fields and courts of Central PA. I was born and raised in Hampden Township, so I spent most of my youth at Salem Park, Hampden Township Park, and Creekview. When I entered Cumberland Valley High School, I began to realize my childhood dream of playing sports for the CV Eagles. I had looked up to my older brothers and sisters and their friends who played for CV. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world to play sports at CV. I still do.

What inspires you to coach?

Mumma: When I was a student at CV, my teachers and coaches always seemed to love what they were doing. I always imagined myself being here, having fun with the students and sharing our common love of sports. Now that I’m here, I want to share that joy and fun with the next generation. I want to help them to make the most of their time here at this stage of their lives at this amazing place.

What are values you hope to instill in your team?

Mumma: The game teaches values, not me. It is a game of enduring through failure. If we stopped playing the first time we failed at it, we’d never have made it out of tee ball. You have to keep trying.

What is it like to play for CV baseball-what are workouts and tryouts like? How much time is entailed?

Mumma: High school baseball at a 6A school is a dramatic change from township rec or travel ball. In those other settings, players can expect to play every day and have a starring role. In our league and our school, players have to understand their role on the team. Our players come from over ten different travel programs, so when they get here, they have to learn to be a part of a team that is greater than the individual. If our players put our team goals ahead of theirs, then both the team and the individuals on it will succeed.

What other support staff and assistant coaches help with the team?

Mumma: Just like the players, each coach has his own role for the program. The worst quality a coach can have is thinking that he knows everything and can do everything. One of my favorite parts of coaching is learning from other coaches, and we have some great ones in our dugout.

Who are some of your tougher opponents?

Mumma: There is not one definite win on our schedule. The Mid-Penn Commonwealth is the best, most talented league in the state. For our non-conference games, we schedule the best we can find. It is not a cliche. Any team can beat any team any day. That is exclusively a characteristic of baseball. That’s why this is the best game in the world.

Can you please send us a schedule that we can share?

Mumma: www.cvschools.org/athletics/teams/baseball/schedule

Do you have any favorite quotes?

Mumma: Baseball doesn’t care about your feelings.

Are there any players to especially keep an eye out for this year?

Mumma: Logan Sauve, WVU commit. Jason Madrak, IUP commit. Nate Miller, Goldey-Beacon College Commit, Kyle McKeon, Brady Grimes

Anything else you’d like people to know about CV Baseball?

Mumma: We have five special home games this. Watch our Twitter feed for more to come in ’22, including the first ever night baseball game at Cumberland Valley.
