Q&A with East Hamilton head football coach Grant Reynolds
OOLTEWAH, Tenn. — A Q&A with Coach Grant Reynolds, Head Football Coach at East Hamilton High School.
How long have you been coaching?
Grant Reynolds: 23 years
What is your background in this sport?
Reynolds: I played high school football in Shreveport Louisiana (my hometown). I played collegiately at Harding University in Searcy Arkansas. I was an assistant coach for 10 years before I became a Head Coach. I have coached at Boyd Buchanan School in Chattanooga, Madison Academy in Huntsville, AL, and East Hamilton.
What are one or two things that the team does in training that are keys to their success?
Reynolds: Weight training is key to our success. We are currently in the weight room 4-5 days a week. Also, summer practice and conditioning are key to being successful. To be a good football team you must be in shape.
What are the most memorable games/tournaments/championships your team has won?
Reynolds: Playing in state championship games and regional championship games throughout my career in two different states. The big games are why you coach, and we have been fortunate to win our fair share of them.
How do you encourage the team after a disappointing loss?
Reynolds: We will try to learn from our mistakes and move on. You cannot dwell on a loss, or it will cause you to lose again.
Describe your proudest coaching moment.
Reynolds: Being around my (own) children as part of the high school experience. My daughter as a cheerleader and my son as a player. I really loved those times of our family sharing the field on Friday nights.
What is the biggest life lesson you have learned from being a coach?
Reynolds: Parents entrust coaches with their most precious asset (their son) it is our responsibility as coaches to hold them accountable and teach life lessons, while giving those young men a sense of belonging and pride in what they do.
What legacy do you hope to leave as a coach?
Reynolds: That the young men I coach will one day be good husbands, fathers, and leaders in our community… I am thankful every day for my job as the Head Football coach at East Hamilton. I am surrounded by some outstanding assistant coaches, administrators and a wonderful school climate that helps us be successful. We really are a family at East Hamilton High School.
