Washington Township’s Julian Allen playing for USFL’s Houston Gamblers
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — From Washington Township High School, to the National Football League, XFL, and now the United States Football League. The next chapter in tight end Julian Allen’s professional football career will kick off mid-April, as part of the inaugural USFL season.
Allen was drafted by the Houston Gamblers, one of eight teams in the league that also include the Birmingham Stallions, Michigan Panthers, New Jersey Generals, New Orleans Breakers, Philadelphia Stars, Pittsburgh Maulers, and Tampa Bay Bandits. The 2022 USFL season will be played in its entirety at a neutral site in Birmingham, Alabama.
“I am beyond grateful and blessed for this opportunity,” said Allen. “I thank the USFL and Houston Gamblers for taking a chance on me. I couldn’t be more excited to get to work with my new teammates and coaching staff.”
A former WTHS Minuteman, Allen attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where as a Division 1 senior athlete he was a candidate for the prestigious John Mackey Award — bestowed annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.
After going unselected in the NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns signed Allen following rookie mini-camp tryouts in the spring of 2018. Allen later played for the XFL’s Dallas Renegades, before the COVID-19 pandemic halted the league.
Allen also co-owns NJ Performance Lab, located on Greentree Road near Route 42. Open seven days a week, the business offers in-person one-on-one training and yoga sessions, as well as online programs.
One of Allen’s newest USFL teammates is quarterback Clayton Thorson — who was previously drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. To learn more, visit www.theusfl.com.
