Get to know Hutto HS two-sport athlete Gary Choice
HUTTO, Texas — Most of us have to choose, either we are going to excel in athletics or we going to excel in academics. The reason we have to choose is because most of us don’t have the time or skills to be good at both. Gary Choice didn’t want to make that choice. He didn’t have to. He is one of those rare breeds who has the aptitude and aspiration for success in both!
Gary is a junior at Hutto High School and is a two-sport athlete. He runs track (100, 200, long and triple jump). He has been on the varsity squad since his freshman year. He also plays on the varsity football team as a wide receiver. Gary also happens to be a straight “A” student. He loves to read (especially science-fiction), and he is one of those polite kids who still responds to adults with a “yes sir/mam.”
He’s among the best and brightest of Hippo nation.
If asked, Gary will tell you he loves football. It’s not just the excitement of the sport, it’s the comradery he feels with his fellow teammates. “I’ve been playing with some of these guys since kindergarten. The bond is pretty strong when you have played together that long!” That is not say that he doesn’t have an affinity for track. Track was actually his first sport. Football came a year later. “The thing I love about track is that the results are immediate. You know how you did right away. Plus, running is pretty much the foundation for everything else. So, it makes sense to continue practicing and improving on the basics.”
Gary’s parents are Gary II and Shontel. Gary II served in the Navy and so the family moved frequently making their home in Tyler, Chicago, San Diego and eventually landing in Hutto in 2010. They knew early on they had a talented oldest son. No question he was gifted. But, as parents, they made the point with their kids that academics were always the priority. “We are a school-first family.” Their message hit home and Gary III walks it out faithfully and his family and coaches couldn’t be prouder.
The Choice household is a busy place, because alongside their oldest son’s multi-sport exploits, they have three other children Dairen (16), and then a set of twins Derrick and Mariah (8). Given the success of their oldest child, Hippo nation has a lot to look forward to as the rest of the crew makes their own wise choices for the future.
