Clovis North golfer Maddie Reed has come a long way

FRESNO, Calif. — Maddie Reed has come a long way from golf cart rides at the age of six with her dad across the course, watching him hit a few shots here and there. As a Varsity golfer at Clovis North, Maddie Reed has many accomplishments under her belt as a golfer now, including TRAC 2021 player of the year and 2021 Individual Central Section Champion. Clearly a huge factor for the Clovis North Girl’s Golf team, she does not let anything stop her, especially not negativity. In fact, she says, it “pushes [her] to succeed”, and succeed she has.

This success is not without the help of coaches throughout the years. She cites her high school coach Jordan, who told her “don’t be afraid of messing up” – in other words, play the way you train, and be confident in your skills.

Overcoming difficulties in her sport is a mix of this skill and confidence. During the TRAC tournament of her junior year, Reed shanked a shot and had to come back, for herself and her team. Focus on the game, confidence in herself, and skill in her play helped her to overcome the tough spot she was in, leading her team to a win.

That team is something important to her. To Maddie, being a part of a team is learning accountability  – accountability to push the person behind you, to compete with each other to make one another better. Mid-round encouragement, she says, is not something that happens in the game of golf, so she is learning to talk to each player beforehand. Working as a team is something that Maddie credits to her sport, as well as how to be a leader and work hard. She also believes that sports do truly make a difference in her world, and the world around her.
