The historic Dutcher Golf Course in Pawling

PAWLING, N.Y. — The historic Dutcher Golf Course, originally known as Pawling Golf Links, is considered one of the oldest public courses in the United States. Constructed as a 3-hole course in 1885, its 42 acres were converted to 9 holes in 1890 and remains virtually unchanged to this day. Framed and bisected by the original stone farm walls, it was designed in a traditional “links” style and always gives players an eventful round of golf.

The course was originally designed by John B. Dutcher, who fell in love with the game after a vacation to Scotland in 1872. On his trip he met Tom Morris, a four-time consecutive Open Champion who provided the inspiration to design the course. He built the original 3 holes for friends and family who stayed at the Dutcher House which he completed building in 1884. Soon after completion of the Dutcher house the course was redesigned by respected golf course architect Tom Bendelow and remained in the Dutcher’s control until it was donated to the Town on November 10, 1955 in memory of John B. Dutcher and John G. Dutcher by John’s daughter-in-law Helen Willets Dutcher. Its one stipulation is that it remains a public course in perpetuity.

Through the years Dutcher Golf Course has proven itself to be an asset to the community. It has been used by injured Air Force personnel during World War II, who were transported from Green Mountain Farm (today’s Lakeside Park) for recreation and recovery. Today it is used by the Pawling Schools for their seasonal matches as well as recreation – an original match dates back to a May 29th 1918 against Lawrenceville School. And of course, it’s beloved by the countless community members who have been enjoying Dutcher year in and year out.

Today the course conditions are the best they’ve been in years. The walls surrounding Dutcher which were once overgrown with brush are now cleared. Newly seeded areas surround the now renovated greens to make play more enjoyable, and tee times allow for a more streamlined playing experience. There are several leagues for the avid golfer and tee times are available up to a week in advance. Memberships are also offered which allow for unlimited play during the season, and there are several popular night golf events planned every season.

In recent years golf has once again grown in popularity as a fantastic outdoor activity. With the average round at 1 hour and 45 minutes, it’s a great way to enjoy time with friends. The novice all the way to the experienced golfer will enjoy everything Dutcher Golf Course has to offer.
