The High River Dreamers pre-novice synchronized skaters

HIGH RIVER, Alberta — The High River Dreamers Pre-Novice Synchronized Skating team is made up of a dozen skaters from Okotoks and High River between the ages of 12-17.

Synchronized skating (or Synchro) is a discipline of figure skating in which teams of skaters perform elements (such as shapes, lines, and wheels) in a themed program.

The Dreamers practice out of the High River Skating Club and compete from September to the end of March. This season, their theme program was based on the book/movie entitled ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.’

Coached by Shaelyn Case, who organized the team in 2016, to create a local opportunity to grow the discipline of synchronized skating, the Dreamers took part in two competitions in their 2021/2022 season: the Rose Bowl Competition in Calgary in December and the  Ice Fest Competition which took place in March in Carstairs.

“The season has been a learning experience for the team, which moved up to a much higher level of competition,” Coach Case said, “and they have risen to the challenge and made me proud. They ended this last competition with their personal best score this season. I love being a part of the lifelong friendships and memories this team has created together.”

Shaelyn, a Regional Certified Skate Canada coach, also mentors another synchronized skating team of seven skaters aged between 9 and 12. Her goal is to continue growing both teams by encouraging skaters in the area to join the fun.
