Q&A with Kingsway Regional softball HC Jill Ward

WOOLWICH TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A Q&A with Kingsway Regional softball HC Jill Ward.

How long have you been coaching?

Jill Ward: I have been coaching softball for over 7 years now, starting with Little League and travel softball.  I have been the Head Coach at Kingsway since 2020.

What is your background in this sport?

Ward:  I played softball for about 30 years. I played High School ball at Interboro High School in Prospect Park, PA.  I also played and was a pitcher at Lehigh University from 1994 to 1998.

Name a person who inspired you to coach/play this sport?

Ward:  There are several.  My parents were vital to me pursuing both playing and coaching.  My dad sat on a bucket for endless hours (and many broken windows) to make me a better pitcher.  My coach during most of my younger years was Chuck Pedrick and was a big influence. Also, my college coach Fran Troyan and my college teammates who are still my closest friends.

What are things the team does in training that is key to their success?

Ward: This is an area that is rich in softball talent.  Most of the student-athletes are very self-motivated and work hard year-round. There is an expectation to do well each year and they push each other to keep that winning tradition at Kingsway.  If we have a disappointing loss, we talk about what we can do differently next time and what work still needs to be done.  But losing can be a blessing in disguise!   Some adversity can and should make you a better team!

What’s the most memorable game that they have won?

Ward: The South Jersey Group IV championship last year was most memorable.  Pouring rain, the whole school watching, and the girls pulled it off in the last inning!

Describe your proudest coaching moment.

Ward: Wow, that’s difficult, there are so many.  What stands out to me was something that didn’t even take place on the field.  During COVID in 2020, the girls lost their entire season.   It was so important to help them all through the emotions and loss that they were experiencing in such uncertain times.  Finding ways to keep them connected to each other and the coaches was a challenge, but one I am proud of!

What is the biggest life lesson you have learned as a coach?

Ward: Wins and championships are wonderful, but creating a well-rounded athlete is even more important.  These young women have a lot going on in their lives and as coaches, we need to be in tune with that.  Each and every student is vital to the program itself, from freshmen to seniors to alumni.

What legacy do you hope to leave as a coach?

Ward: Lots of championships and great memories for these girls to have for the rest of their lives! Also that their coaches will always be there for them, even when they’ve moved on to the next chapter of their lives.

How about a message of support for the team?

Ward: 2022 is YOUR year, Dragons!!!   The talent is there, the desire is there, nothing will stop you this year!
