Q&A with University High senior softball player Brooke Cordray

NORMAL, Ill. — A Q&A with University High senior softball player Brooke Cordray.
What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Brooke Cordray: Outside of softball, I play basketball for U High, listen to music, take naps and bake for my friends and family.

When you close your eyes and dream about your future, what does that look like?

Cordray: I hope in the future I will be able to travel. I have always wanted to visit countries like France, Italy and Switzerland. I also hope I have a job that I enjoy. I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet, but I really like forensic science and social sciences.

Ask someone in your family to pick one word to describe you. Who did you pick and what word did they use?

Cordray: I chose my dad, and he said that I’m “cool,” meaning that I am calm and collected, even when pressure is high.

As an athlete, what is a rule you live by?

Cordray: I always tell myself to work my hardest during my sport and at school.

How would you describe your personality?

Cordray: I think that I have an optimistic and supportive personality.

What is your favorite snack food?

Cordray: My favorite snack foods are probably popcorn or fruit snacks.

Favorite pregame song to listen to?

Cordray: I will listen to anything before a game, but I love listening to throwbacks, especially from the ’80s and 2000s.

Do you have a pregame ritual you always do?

Cordray: No, not really.

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?

Cordray: Many of my coaches have advised us to always go out with a plan so you will know what to do in possible situations. For example, if you’re hitting off a slower pitcher, think about hitting it to the opposite field. If you’re in the field with a runner at first, know where you need to go if the ball is hit to you and where to go if it isn’t. If you go out with a plan, you will be much more likely to be successful.

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Cordray: In the outfield, I have missed do-or-die plays due to not having my glove all the way down or by throwing the ball off-target. To overcome this mistake, I have put in extra practice for this play, working on specific parts of it individually so that I become more confident when it happens in a game.
