Brown University junior guard Perry Cowan Jr. is looking to continue his great success
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (BVM) — Perry Cowan Jr. is doing very well at Brown University and he is looking to continue to do that next year.
He is currently a junior at Brown University, and has just finished up his second season with the Bears, in which Brown finished 13-16 overall.
It unfortunately ended with a loss to Yale University 74-65 in the last game of the regular season on March 5. In that game Cowan Jr. had three points, two rebounds, one block, and one steal.
He had a solid junior season averaging 4.0 points, 1.0 rebound, and 0.5 assists per game off the bench. He played in 25 games this season and started three of those games.
The reason he has only played two seasons of basketball for Brown so far is because the 2020-2021 season, which would have been his sophomore season, was unfortunately canceled by the Ivy League on Nov. 12, 2020 due to COVID. That experience showed Cowan that you always have to be ready to play and have to take advantage of your opportunity.
“You always gotta be ready to be ready to play and never take anything for granted like on and off the court,” Cowan Jr. said.
In his freshman season, he averaged 3.4 points, 1.0 rebound, and 0.4 assists per game. He also played 27 games and started eight of those games.
His favorite part of playing basketball at Brown is his teammates.
“My teammates most definitely, and like the fun we have on and off the court, practices, games, just the bonds we share,” Cowan Jr. said.
Cowan Jr.’s best game was against Harvard on Jan. 7, in which Brown defeated Harvard 84-73. He had 15 points, one assist, and two rebounds in that victory.
The transition from playing high school basketball at DePaul College Prep to college basketball at Brown University was alright. In high school Cowan Jr. was a four-time all conference selection, two-time all league selection as well as a four-time all-state, all-city, and all-area selection. His skill helped him with the transition but the biggest difference was the speed of the game. The physicality and competition were not big but that the little things also matter more in college than they do in high school.
What made Cowan Jr. want to go to Brown University is the atmosphere, opportunities, networking, his teammates and coaches. Those relationships both on and of the court have played a huge role in his success at the university.
He describes school being great. Cowan Jr. is majoring in Kinesiology at Brown. There have been some hard classes but school overall is easy for him. Cowan Jr. credits some of his academic success to the help he has received from his teachers, professors, and other classmates. To Cowan Jr. it feels like all of them want to see him succeed and will do anything to help him.
Cowan Jr. is hoping that success will happen next year with Ivy League Championship and a spot in March Madness. He felt that Brown came really close this season but there were a lot of games that the Bears should have won that they didn’t.
