Top 10 Michigan baseball players in Class of 2022
EAST LANSING, Mich. (BVM) — Loaded is a good word to describe Michigan’s high school baseball Class of 2022. Half of the top 10 players suit up for the No. 1 team in the nation in Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. In addition, the current crop is filled with elite pitching prospects, which takes us right to the list.
1. Brock Porter, RHP, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound flamethrower can reportedly touch triple digits on his fastball and routinely throws in the mid-90s with movement. Porter adds a cruel changeup to his pitching arsenal as well. He posted a perfect 12-0 record for St. Mary’s last year and a miserly ERA of 0.56 with 126 strikeouts. Porter pitched a no-hitter earlier this month and holds an ERA of 0.88 in 2022. The Clemson commit is projected to be a first-round pick in July’s MLB Draft.

2. Ike Irish, C, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
Irish is a blue-chip talent who has major league scouts smitten. The 6-foot-2 senior catcher wields a shotgun arm and hair-trigger swing. He finished 2021 with a.419 batting average, 12 home runs and 53 runs batted in, along with 59 runs scored. Irish is crushing the ball so far this spring. He’s hitting .500 with seven home runs and 18 RBI through 12 games. He plans to play for Auburn University.

3. Nolan Schubart, 1B/OF, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
At 6-foot-5, Schubart is a large lefty slugger who stands out with a punishing swing. A fine stat line from his junior season only begins to tell his story. The University of Michigan commit hit .407 with nine HR and 55 RBIs for repeat [Division 2] state champion St. Mary’s. Schubart has huge upside beyond that.

4. David Lally RHP/IF, Grand Blanc Community
Lally is the definition of a dangerous weapon on the diamond. The senior fireballer slings heat that is reported to reach well into the 90s. He can rely on numerous other pitches from a refined repertoire. Lally added an impressive .406 BA with six homers and knocked home 47 runs. The 6-foot-4 ace even slots in at shortstop. Perfect Game calls Lally a five-star prospect and grades him a 10, its highest score. He announced his commitment to the University of Notre Dame in 2020.

5. Tommy Szczepanski, RHP/3B, Garber (HS) Essexville
The fourth-year hurler is a hot prospect. Szczepanski clocks over 90 mph on his heater and closed his junior campaign with a 1.42 ERA. He recorded 18Ks in a no-hitter vs. Birch Run a year ago. He also raked 29 RBI for Garber on offense. The Michigan signee threw a one-hit gem while retiring 11 batsmen to begin the 2022 season.
6. Wyatt Danilowicz, LHP, Traverse City West Senior
Danilowicz is a dynamo who factors big on both sides of the ball. Through 70 innings last spring, the lefthander yielded a mere nine hits. He fanned 170 with a meager 0.39 ERA. Besides that, Danilowicz hit .415 with multiple extra-base cracks, eight HRs and 30 RBIs. Baseball news tabbed the future Louisville Cardinal as a first-team preseason All-American. He was dealing on Saturday vs. Gull Lake, notching 10Ks over five frames.
7. Gregory Pace Jr. OF/RHP, Detroit Edison Public School Academy
Pace Jr. is a gifted all-around athlete. The senior outfielder owns a rocket arm and carries a sweet stroke to the batter’s box. The ball pops right off his bat. His sensational speed (6.35 seconds in the 60-yard dash) and sharp instincts make him a constant threat on the basepaths. That should concern any opposing pitcher.

8. Jack Crighton 3B/IF, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
Crighton has been crucial to St. Mary’s smashing success. He is very disciplined at the plate. The star infielder logged a .438 BA, nine doubles and 38 RBIs as a junior. He holds a .457 BA with 16 RBI through 12 games in 2022. His versatility is a major asset. Crighton recently signed his letter of intent to Michigan.
9. Donavan Canterberry, SS/OF/RHP, Wyandotte Roosevelt
Canterberry capped his junior year with an excellent 1.59 ERA. He turned away 68 batters and averaged a strikeout per inning as he drew all-league distinction. Further, he proved to be quite a presence at the plate, posting a .317 BA with a dozen extra base knocks and a whopping 30 steals. Canterberry intends to play for Xavier University.

10. Jake Dresselhouse, OF, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
The St. Mary’s senior paced the title winners with 14 bombs in 2021, hitting.409 with 61 RBI. His array of athletic abilities and sound defensive skills are on display in the outfield. And he swats all across the yard.
