Top 10 Kentucky baseball players in Class of 2022

LEXINGTON, Ky. (BVM) – With a handful of National Baseball Hall of Famers once calling the state home and a number of Division I programs including yearly title contenders and strong regional competitors, Kentucky is one of the more underrated baseball factories in the entire country. This year’s crop of seniors exemplify this understanding as most find themselves at Division I programs and are set up for strong collegiate success following their high school graduation.

1. Korbyn Dickerson, OF, Trinity of Louisville

One of a number of players on this list that will play for the top in-state and nationally recognized program at the University of Louisville, Dickerson is close to a unanimous choice for the state’s top position player thanks to his resume. A first team all-state player a year ago, Dickerson finished with the fourth-most RBIs, eighth-most home runs and the No. 11 slugging percentage in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association a year ago. This year hasn’t been much different as Dickerson has burst onto the scene tied for third in the state in RBIs and triples with 33 and four respectively, tied for fifth in home runs with five, sixth in slugging percentage with 1.091%, tied for seventh in batting average hitting .564 and tied for eighth in hits with 31 in 20 games for the defending state champion Shamrocks. Fair to say the Cardinals are getting a strong player when Dickerson gets to campus.

2. Matt Klein, C, Trinity of Louisville

A current and future teammate of Dickerson, Klein will also stay in the city of Louisville in college when he joins the Cardinals. A second team all-state member a year ago, Klein also excelled with his bat for the eventual state champion Shamrocks as he finished tied for fifth in the KHSAA in triples with five while also having the No. 17 slugging percentage at .862. So far this season Klein has stepped up his game alongside Dickerson, as he is tied for fourth in the state in triples with three, tied for eighth in hits with 31 and ranks No. 12 in batting average at .544. The combination of Klein and Dickerson will likely help the Cards continue their strong play into the future.

3. Chase Alderman, RHP, Rowan County

The first non-position player and coincidently the first non-Louisville player on this list, Alderman was one of the best pitchers the state had to offer a year ago as noted by his second team all-state honors. Alderman finished the year with a team-best 1.46 ERA with 81 strikeouts and 27 walks to finish with a 6-1 record in eight starts over 38.1 innings pitched. Equally efficient at the plate, Alderman ranked seventh in the state in hits with 59 while hitting .492 with 34 RBIs, 10 doubles, four triples and three home runs. This season, Alderman has again excelled both on the mound and at the plate as a strong two-way player. Currently tied for fourth in the state in runs scored with 35, Alderman is hitting .338 with 22 hits, 19 RBIs, six doubles, three home runs and one triple. On the bump, Alderman has a 2.70 ERA with 46 strikeouts and 17 walks with a 3-2 record with six starts in six appearances. Listed primarily as a pitcher for the next level, though he dabbles in the infield at times for the Vikings, Alderman is committed to in-state Eastern Kentucky University.

4. Bennett Myers, RHP, Franklin County

Another infielder and pitcher combo, Myers had a stronger 2021 season at the plate than on the mound. Hitting .523, good for ninth in the state on the year, Myers played 31 games for the Eagles while only pitching in four. He would register 45 hits, 32 RBIs, 24 runs, 15 doubles and five home runs on the year. On the mound, Myers pitched 10 innings in four starts and would register a 2.80 ERA with 17 strikeouts and five walks. His performance earned him first team all-state honors that season. So far this season, the senior has excelled at the dish and with an expanded role on the mound. Myers currently has a .451 batting average with 23 hits, seven RBIs, three doubles and two home runs on the year. On the bump, he’s become a bit more dominant with a 0.72 ERA with 17 strikeouts and just three walks over 9.2 innings pitched. With a strong arm from the mound, Myers is set to join one of the best pitching staffs at the collegiate level when he joins Tennessee next season.

5. Patrick Forbes, SS, Bowling Green

One of the top players in the state this season, Forbes has solidified himself as a top prospect during the early part of this season. After being a second team all-state selection last season after registering a .406 batting average with 39 hits, 35 RBIs, seven doubles, four home runs and three triples, Forbes has quickly become one of the toughest outs of the 2022 season. His nine home runs are currently tied for the most in the KHSAA to begin the season while his 45 runs scored leads the state. Additionally, his 37 RBIs rank third, his 36 hits rank third, his 1.143 slugging percentage ranks fourth and his .571 batting average ranks sixth in the state rankings. Forbes is yet another position player set to join the Louisville Cardinals following the 2022 season.

6. Luke Gaffney, C, Boyle County

A third team all-state member a year ago, Gaffney is also expected to take his talents to a Division I program, though he will be leaving the state to make his mark. Last year, Gaffney finished tied for tenth in the state with 49 RBIs while hitting .430 with 43 hits, 10 doubles and seven home runs over 36 games. This season, it appears Gaffney is set for another all-state performance as his early returns have been strong with a .492 batting average, 31 hits, 27 RBIs, 13 doubles and five home runs over the team’s 19 games. Gaffney is set to play collegiately at Purdue University.

7. Brady Morse, RHP, Danville

Another 2021 third team all-state member, Morse finished his junior campaign with one of the best records in the state at 8-1, good for a tie for the fourth most wins in the KHSAA. Though he played for a strong Danville team, Morse differentiated himself on the mound with a strong 2.23 ERA while registering 58 strikeouts to just eight walks over 37.2 innings pitched in 10 games with nine starts. So far in 2022, Morse is once again back to his dominant self as has a 5-1 record, tied for the second most wins this season. He currently leads the Admirals with a 1.77 ERA while registering 48 strikeouts and seven walks over 27.2 innings pitched in six games, all starts. Another Division I baseball commit, Morse will play in-state at Bellarmine University.

8. Brady Baxter, RHP, Danville

This was truly a toss up between Baxter and his teammate Morse and they are so close they should practically be considered on the same line. Baxter bested Morse in the all-state honors as he was a second team member thanks to a slightly better bat than Morse though even that was close. Baxter finished his junior season on the mound with a 1.79 ERA, 54 strikeouts and 10 walks with a 6-0 record and two saves for the Admirals. Baxter is dominating as a strikeout pitcher early in the 2022 season as his 70 strikeouts give him the sixth most in the KHSAA. Currently second on the team with a 1.91 ERA, just behind Morse’s 1.77, Baxter has pitched a team-high 36.2 innings with 70 strikeouts to just eight walks and is 5-1 with two saves in nine games with three starts. Like his pitching partner Morse, Baxter will also play at the Division I level as he is set to join Marshall University in 2022.

9. Brody Williams, C, Lyon County

With 10 home runs a year ago, ranked sixth in the KHSAA, Williams was able to earn third team all-state honors by batting .358 with 43 hits, 38 RBIs, 12 doubles and his 10 home runs while playing all 38 of the team’s games. During the early part of the season, Williams has once again showed off his power as he currently ranks third in the state in slugging percentage at 1.156 while his eight home runs are currently the second most. With a .489 batting average along with 26 RBIs, 22 hits, eight home runs, four doubles and a triple, expect Williams to once again find himself on an all-state team by year’s end. Williams will also be playing Division I baseball in the Mid-American Conference as a member of Kent State.

10. Gavin Faulkner, LHP, Frederick Douglass

The lone southpaw pitcher on this list, Faulkner has shown his abilities over the past couple of seasons for Frederick Douglass, earning honorable mention all-state honors last year. During that season, Faulkner started all 10 games he pitched in going 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA while recording 77 strikeouts and 39 walks over 46.2 innings pitched. During the early part of this season, Faulkner has been one of the top starting pitchers in the entire state. During his five starts, Faulkner has just a 0.66 ERA, tied for 12th in the state, while adding 38 strikeouts and 13 walks and has gone 4-0 over 21.1 innings pitched. As one of the top arms in the state this year, it is unsurprising to hear that Faulkner is also set to pitch at the Division I level next season, joining Alderman at EKU.
