Jackson softball focuses on the process of improving every day

JACKSON, Ohio — Jackson High School girls’ varsity softball coaches Laura Cheyney, Kahle Wilcox, Kaity Davis, and Jon Cheyney along with the junior varsity coaches Debbie McKee and Oliver Miday want the best for their teams including winning a Federal League title.

“While we would love to win a Federal League title, we try to focus on the process and getting better every day,” said head coach Laura Cheyney. “Our goal is to become one and build a team culture and legacy that gets passed down for years and years to come.”

Before each game, one girl chooses a motivational quote to read to the girls and explains why she chose that particular quote. Cheyney said the ritual helps get the girls in a good mindset to compete.

When they win, Cheyney said the team celebrates with a lot of cheering! Then, after the game, they gather in the outfield to talk about the successes of the team. The girls choose a teammate who they think earned the “game ball” for that game.

Cheyney believes the team is extremely welcoming and accepting of newcomers.

“We actually had a transfer student (Morgan) move in from Texas this year about a month into our season. The girls instantly welcomed her onto the team to the point where it feels as if she has been in Jackson her whole life,” Cheyney said.

The team’s motivation this year has been all about the idea of getting better every day and constantly competing. The team competes day in and day out whether it is at practice or a game, so they are constantly striving to reach their fullest potential.
