Utah’s top 10 baseball players in Class of 2022

MIDVALE, Utah (BVM) – The high school baseball season is in full swing in Utah, and some of the state’s best talent has been on display. That includes several players from the state’s Class of 2022 which features some high-level college baseball prospects. Let’s take a look at the top 10 senior baseball players in Utah this spring.

1. Fisher Ingersoll, SS (American Fork High School, American Fork)

Ingersoll is the top talent in the state in the Class of 2022 and has a bright future ahead. Last season, he finished top five in the state with 41 RBIs while batting an impressive .610 as he racked up 50 total hits. This year, the 6-foot-3 standout has shown even more pop in his bat with a state-leading eight home runs. In 2021, Ingersoll was named Utah’s Mr. Baseball and the state’s Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year. He also helped lead American Fork, coached by his father Jarod, to a 30-1 record and Class 6A state title. Also a talented football player who had several DI offers in that sport, Ingersoll will look to lead 13-4 American Fork to another state title with his continued strong play before heading off to play baseball at TCU.

2. Payton Gubler, SS/P (Desert Hills High School, St. George)

Gubler is a strong two-way player that has flashed plenty of potential as both an infielder and a pitcher. Last season, he earned Class 4A first team honors going 7-2 on the mound with a 0.81 ERA and 95 strikeouts. Meanwhile, he continues to show his strength at the plate this spring with seven home runs. With a solid bat combined with his defense in the infield, there is a possibility the 5-foot-10 talent remains a two-way player once he gets to BYU, but it is his arm talent on the bump that continues to stand out.

3. Mic Paul, OF (Olympus High School, Holladay)

Paul has also started the season off strong at the plate with five home runs, building on a terrific 2021 campaign in which he led the state with seven triples. His speed also led him to steal over 30 bases last spring as the second team all-state and first team all-region player helped Olympus to an impressive 25-4 record. Originally committed to Arizona, Paul will follow Coach Jay Johnson to play for the LSU Tigers next year as part of the top recruiting class in the nation according to Perfect Game.

4. Luke Anderson, OF (Snow Canyon High School, St. George)

Anderson is another strong bat that is among the state’s leaders in average, batting over .600, and RBIs, with 30. He has helped lead Snow Canyon to a 14-9 record thus far in the campaign. Last season, Anderson also impressed, hitting .411 with four home runs, 11 doubles and 32 RBIs as a first team all-state player, leading the Warriors to a state championship. He will look to lead Snow Canyon back to a title this year, but it is a joy just to be on the field this season for the BYU commit. After suffering a UCL injury in the fall, Anderson underwent Tommy John surgery and had to work his way back for the spring. Although he is not doing much pitching as the injury continues to fully heal, it has not slowed his bat or his obvious talent whatsoever.

5. Kaden Carpenter, OF/P (American Fork High School, American Fork)

Paired in the same lineup with Ingersoll, Carpenter forms a lethal duo that has been a big reason for the recent success of American Fork. Carpenter is a strong hitter with a 6-foot-5 frame, and showed that last year while batting .444 with six homers and 36 RBIs. The lefty has also found plenty of success on the mound in recent years, going a perfect 9-0 for the Cavemen in 2021. Unlike Ingersoll, the smooth-swinging Carpenter will stay in state for his college ball and play with the University of Utah. But first, the two stars, along with another elite talent in BYU commit Easton Jones, will look to lead American Fork to another title.

6. Isaac Lyon, P/SS (Snow Canyon High School, St. George)

Baseball genes run in Lyon’s family, as he is the son of former MLB pitcher Brandon Lyon. With the way he keeps progressing, Isaac may find himself in the big leagues himself one day. Playing alongside Anderson, Lyon became a state champion last season, which was Snow Canyon’s first title since 2013. The 6-foot-2 standout has had a batting average well over .300 in his high school career as well as an ERA around 1.50. The soon-to-be Grand Canyon product has positioned himself nicely for a bright future on the mound.

7. Garrison Sumner, P (Westlake High School, Saratoga Springs)

Sumner has long been a fixture in Utah’s Class of 2022 baseball rankings. The pitcher features some nasty stuff including a fastball that touches the low 90s. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-4 pitcher did have surgery on his elbow last year, derailing much of his summer and fall seasons. This spring, the Westlake standout is back, being named a preseason all-state player by Prep Baseball Report. As long as he’s at full health, he has the ability to become a true standout on the mound in 2023 for the Utah Utes.

8. Easton Romero, C/1B (Spanish Fork High School, Spanish Fork)

Romero is yet another standout on this list who won a state championship in 2021 with Spanish Fork. The first team all-state player was impressive throughout the campaign with a .333 batting average, seven home runs, 34 RBIs and a .554 on-base percentage. An athletic hitter that really can play all over the field, Romero was also named Class 5A playoff MVP, and followed up a strong spring with an impressive summer for Team Utah. He will stay in state to play college baseball with BYU after committing to the Cougars back in 2019.

9. Jace Carroll, P/1B (Stansbury High School, Stansbury Park)

Carroll not only continues to shine in Utah, but also had a chance to show his stuff at the West Coast Games and Area Code Games last year. There, the 6-foot-6 talent displayed his full pitching arsenal which includes a fastball around 90 mph, a decent changeup and a fantastic curveball. Carroll was solid on the mound last year for Stansbury with an ERA around 1.50 and has continued to progress as a hitter as well. Carroll will play in college for Dixie State out of the West Coast Conference next year, but first hopes to put on more dazzling performances for Stansbury.

10. Sam Beck, SS (Riverton High School, Riverton)

There are many who could fill this final spot on the list, but Beck has continued to impress through the home stretch of his high school career. Last season, the first team all-state performer batted .413 with a .504 on base percentage and 21 RBIs. He also was a force on the mound for Riverton with 71 strikeouts and a 1.96 ERA. In addition, Beck was named most valuable player at Perfect Game’s 17U WWBA West National Championship in 2021. The pitcher will join forces with other local products in Gubler, Anderson and Romero for what has the looks of a tremendous 2022 signing class for BYU.
