Tremper senior among finalists for WIAA Scholar Athlete Award

KENOSHA, Wis. — Tremper High School senior Ryan Whynott was recently selected as one of 32 finalists from across the state to receive the 2022 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Statewide Scholar Athletic Award. Since 1984, there have only been six athletes from Kenosha high schools honored with Wisconsin’s most prestigious athletic scholar award. This year more than 830 seniors were nominated for the 2022 WIAA Scholar Athlete Award by 430 high schools throughout the state.

To determine the 32 finalists, students were nominated by their coaches and then evaluated based on a variety of factors. “These extraordinary student athletes excel in both academics and athletics,” said Tom Shafranski, Assistant Director of the WIAA. “Sixteen of this year’s 32 WIAA Scholar Athlete finalists have a grade point average of 4.0 to date, while the average GPA is an amazing 3.94. All 32 scholar athlete finalists have already earned a total of 291 varsity letters during their first 3-1/2 years of high school. That’s an average of 9 letters per athlete, and we have not yet completed our spring sports season.”

Like many great athletes, Ryan started playing sports at a young age. He first joined a soccer team at age 7, and by 8 was playing on the Kenosha Crew Club team. At age 10 he began taking tennis lessons for fun, while still playing indoor and outdoor soccer year-round. Although he has dabbled in baseball and golf, soccer and tennis have remained his true passions. Once Ryan got to high school, he left club soccer behind to focus solely on the Tremper boy’s tennis and soccer teams.

Ryan’s dedication to one sport at a time throughout high school (spending about half a school year in each), has allowed him to excel at both and given him time to pursue other activities and maintain an exceptional GPA. In addition to sports, Ryan finds time for student government, Key Club, and Renaissance.

Although he is a natural athlete and all-around good student, Ryan prides himself on mental toughness and credits it as one of the reasons for his success. Congratulations, Ryan!
