Top 10 Washington baseball players in Class of 2022

RENTON, Wash. (BVM) – With the high school baseball season underway in Washington, the top players around the area have continued to showcase the state’s deep talent pool. With a number of MLB prospects and future Division I stars, the Class of 2022 has shaped up to become one of the best classes to date.

Here’s who you should take a look at for the remainder of the spring season:

  1. Aidan Dougherty, Mount Si (OF)

Dougherty has found himself as one of the top outfielders in the state after an impressive career at Mount Si. Following his final season on the football field, the Wildcats senior has racked up a .333 batting average, a .455 on-base percentage and 11 RBIs. His standout year has put his team in position for postseason success with Mount Si currently topping the 4A KingCo standings. Dougherty will look to continue his momentum at the collegiate level when he takes the field for Oregon State next year.

  1. Colton Bower, North Kitsap (C)

One of three Washington State commits on the list, the North Kitsap catcher slots in as the top catcher in the state. Bower might also have the top high school career in the state with a rare three-sport resume. Along with being an elite catcher, Bower has secured a state championship on the basketball court and has made a name for himself on the football field as a hybrid who plays as both a quarterback and a safety. With North Kitsap in the middle of an impressive season, Bower is looking to add a state title on the baseball field to his growing achievements.

  1. Taber Fast, Olympia (LHP)

Part of an impressive pitching staff at Olympia that features three Division I commits, Fast might just be the ace of the group. Heading into the season as a First Team Preseason All-American in Perfect Game’s west region, his standout year would come as much at the plate as it would on the mound. The Olympia star has racked up a .511 batting average, a .589 on-base percentage, and 24 hits, proving to be dynamic as both a pitcher and position player. With Olympia’s breakout season, Fast is looking to close the season off as a state champion before he heads to Texas Tech.

  1. Tyce Peterson, Juanita (SS)

The second of two Oregon State commits on the list, Peterson has become one of the top infielders in the state. In his senior season, the Juanita star has excelled, putting together a .400 batting average and a .524 on-base percentage. After showcasing a dynamic skillset as a freshman, Peterson has reached the top of the hitting lists with his all-fields approach at the plate and impressive work in the field. With a chance to end his Ravens’ career on a high note, look for Peterson to continue to build positive momentum before he jumps to the next level.

  1. Reece Walling, Prairie (OF)

The highestranked outfielder in the state, Walling is one of a number of two-sport athletes on the list. Wallings second sport, however, comes on the basketball court. After the winter season was pushed back last year, the Prairie star had to play both sports at the same time. With the seasons getting back to normal this season, Walling has enjoyed the chance to get back to his regular routine on the diamond. Before the year, the Washington State commit cracked Perfect Game’s First Team All-American list for the west region.

  1. Ryan Orr, Tumwater (RHP)

One of the true utility players of this class, Orr has showcased his play throughout the infield and on the mound. The 6-foot, right-handed pitcher and shortstop has been a main cog in Tumwaters solid 2022 season, picking up a selection to Perfect Game’s preseason All-American Second Team in the west region. Like another player on this list, Orr has turned heads on the football field as well throughout his time as a two-sport athlete. With a solid career at the high school level, Orr will look to turn heads at the next level when he heads to Washington State.

  1. Payton Graham, Kamiakin (RHP)

Graham continues the state’s impressive right-handed pitching class, with the Kamiakin ace rising up the rankings over the past year. Set to star at Gonzaga in the near future, Graham has showcased one of the biggest arms in the area with his elite fastball. With a growing resume on the diamond, Graham has shown a pretty notable ability on the football field as well. The two-sport athlete has had a decorated career in both sports, picking up the 2021 MCC Player of the Year and an All-League honoree at both pitcher and third base, while also being named the 2021 MCC All-Purpose Player of the Year in football.

  1. Jackson Cox, Toutle Lake (RHP)

Cox enters his senior season as one of the top players in the upcoming MLB draft. Currently ranked 68th among upcoming prospects, the Toutle Lake pitcher has done more than enough to earn his spot on the list after impressing on the bump. So far this season, Cox has already turned heads, pitching a five-inning no-hitter for the Ducks that has helped propel Toutle Lake to an impressive one loss record. With an eye on his baseball future, Cox has done the most with his limited pitch totals this season, as the Oregon commit prepares for the upcoming months.

  1. Dominic Hellman, Jackson (SS)

The Jackson High School senior is a rare combination of size and athleticism. At 6-foot-6, Hellman has shown his impressive ability in the middle of the infield while showcasing some major power at the plate. Last season, Hellman racked up a .585 batting average with five home runs, one triple and five doubles in the Timberwolves’ abbreviated 13-game schedule. So far in his senior season, the Oregon commit has found a way to outdo himself, batting .603 with a .684 on-base percentage and 34 RBIs. Ranked in the top 300 for upcoming MLB draft prospects, Hellman will have a good opportunity in front of him going forward as he closes out his final prep season on a high note.

  1. Ian Ritchie Jr,  Bainbridge Island (RHP)

One of the top pitchers not only in the state, but in the nation, “JR” Ritchie has become a star on the diamond and will likely hear his name called early when it comes to the MLB draft. The 6-foot-2, right-handed pitcher already showcases a mid-90’s fastball and has dominated his competition throughout his high school career. The past year’s Gatorade Washington Baseball Player of the Year capped off last season with a 6-0 record, while recording a 0.38 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. His accomplishments continued heading into his senior season with the Bainbridge Island ace cracking Perfect Game’s First Team Senior Preseason All-America list. With a commitment to UCLA, Richie will likely have a decision upcoming with his baseball future.
