Lake City HS basketball has some unfinished business for next season
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The point is high school sports are a prominent part of a community. Coeur d’Alene has two great high schools. Each school excelling during different periods of time. I have had a daughter graduate from each school. Coeur d’ Alene High School and Lake City High School. Currently my son plays for the Lake City High School basketball team so I will write a little about them.
LCHS had a pretty incredible 2021-22 season. The opened the year ranked number one in the state of Idaho with 4 players ranking in the top 10 individually. Despite having a target on their backs the entire year, they finished with a 23-3 record. After winning the district championship game by over 40 points, they went down to state with high expectations.
Unfortunately, the state tournament did not go as expected. Here is where sports can be so unpredictable.
The first game was against Centennial High School. In short, they played their best game of the year and we didn’t. A loss in the state tournament eliminates you from winning the state championship. There were all of the emotions you would expect; tears, anger, disbelief, emptiness, and sadness to name a few. There is agony in defeat.
The truth is, life still goes on. Even in defeat important lessons can be learned, not just by players. Parents, grandparents and younger athletes can learn some pretty tough lessons as well.
LCHS has some unfinished business for the 2022-23 season. They will be led by 5 seniors, Kolton Mitchell, Blake Buchanan, Nathan Hocking, Deacon Kiesbuy, and Zach Johnson. Reese Strawn and my son Cason Miller, will be sophomores and expected to be key contributors. I’m sure other key players emerge as well.
