Geneva girls basketball concludes stellar season
GENEVA, Ill. — Congratulations to the Geneva High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team on their 2021-2022 season, which included a win at Sectionals! Head Coach Sarah Meadows shared with Geneva Living highlights of the team’s successful season and what lies ahead.
Girls Basketball has carried a strong tradition for several years at Geneva High School. The team has won many Conference titles, along with several Regional and Sectional titles. Additionally, they have played in the State Tournamens, winning twice in 2017 and 2018. Lead by Coach Meadows, along with Assistant Coaches Lindsey Huettermann and Caty Francis in the 2021-2022 season, the Varsity team was undefeated in Conference and won Regionals, before being defeated in a close loss at Sectionals. Looking to the upcoming season, the team is very excited to start summer basketball and hit the court. The team goals, Coach Meadows shared, are to win the Dukane Conference and continue to compete as far as possible in the post season. The girls face an upcoming tough season, and although no records were broken this season, next year they will have some players who will reach their 1,000 point, a very difficult accomplishment.
As for the team captains, the coaches look to the Seniors for leadership, but place importance on every player given they’re each vital to the success of the team. “Everyone must accept their roles on a team to have success,” Coach Meadows pointed out. For pre-game rituals, the girls decorate the Varsity locker room before the season starts and TikTok videos are always popular prior to each game. When a new member joins, the girls are very welcoming and wonderful, showing each player how they are cared for – something very important not only for the team but the program. And after a win, the team celebrates with dinner or ice cream.
Coach Meadows added, “We have great athletes who are even better people. The girls and families in our program are great. They work hard, they do what they are asked to do, they continue to keep the tradition of success and support each other and our coaches. It is a very special program to be a part of and I am so proud of our girls for what they do on the court and off.”
