Weston takes down Wayland 4-1 in regular season finale

WESTON, Mass. — It was the perfect day to play tennis at Weston High School on Friday as the Wildcats looked to add another win to their win total.

At first singles was Benny Gilligan, who made quick work of his opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0. B. Gilligan has been on a roll as of late, and, as the season has gone on, he only seems to get better. B. Gilligan was in control from start to finish, hitting both quality serves and returns. From there, B. Gilligan would take control of the point with his ground strokes and either force errors from his opponent or move to the net and close out the point. All around, it was a great match for B. Gilligan.

In second singles, Noah Gilligan won 6-0, 6-1. Much like his older brother, N. Gilligan made a high percentage of his serves and his returns and was then able to come to net. A big part of Noah’s game this season has been moving to net and finishing points from there. Additionally, by coming to net for volleys, N. Gilligan succeeds in shortening the points, thus preserving his stamina for points that require more movement. Altogether, it was a solid day on court for N. Gilligan.

In third singles, Zachary Regelman defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-0. As is typical for Regelman, he was very consistent all day long. Every time Regelman steps on the court, he goes out there to play his game, and very often it works. Like the Gilligans, Regelman had a great day on serve and on return which allowed him to mix up his groundstrokes between topspin and slice. Regelman has been solid at third singles all season long, and that continued yesterday as well.

At first doubles, Max Ding and Magnus Starrett brought home the victory 6-3, 6-1. Ding and Starrett once again put a solid performance together for Weston. Both Ding and Starrett served and volleyed well. Ding and Starrett each have very strong groundstrokes as well, which allows them to play doubles in a few different ways and succeed. With another win on the season, Ding and Starret continue to prove why they are one of the best doubles teams in the state.

Despite a hard-fought match in second doubles, Alex Ko and Zunian Luo lost 4-6, 4-6. It was a very competitive match, and Ko and Luo played extremely well even though they did not win. Next time, look for them to put more balls in play.

Weston takes on Westford Academy on Monday in the first round of the DCL Playoffs.
