Q&A with Bloomfield Hills volleyball player Kacy Rankin

BLOOMFIELD, Mich. — Kacy Rankin is a sophomore at Bloomfield Hills High School (BHHS) and a spitfire on the volleyball court.  She’s on the BHHS Varsity Volleyball team.  She’s also a star player on two national travel teams, Team Detroit and Unified.

This past year, Kacy reached out to her former middle school coaches and offered to assist with the middle school teams. Unfortunately, they weren’t coaching this year so Kacy contacted the Athletic Director of Bloomfield Hills Schools to find out the names of the new coaches.  Kacy connected with the new coaches and they invited her to a meeting.  They offered her an opportunity to assist the coaching staff.  Kacy ended up running the practices for the seventh graders and enjoyed watching them improve throughout the season. The team ended up winning 1st place in their division! Kacy shares, “I really loved working with those girls. It was hard to say goodbye to them at the end of the season. However, I’ve been offered the opportunity to be head coach for the 8th grade girls next year.”  Congratulations to Kacy on all her wonderful achievements and best of luck with all her future endeavors.

I had the chance to ask Kacy some questions about her volleyball career thus far and what her future goals entail.

What are your personal goals with playing volleyball?

Kacy Rankin: To continue to improve as an athlete and reach my highest potential. I would love to play at the collegiate level.

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

Rankin: My height is my biggest challenge.  I’m only 5’4 so I have to make up for that in skill and speed

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Rankin: That mindset is everything. If you are down on yourself there’s no way you can play your best.

What do you love about volleyball?

Rankin: The friendships and bonds I make with my teammates. And of course because I’m good at it!

Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?

Rankin: Yes, right before the game begins, I run around screaming and high fiving my teammates to rev them up!

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Rankin: Bake, sleep, shop, of course! But I also like to train middle schoolers in the summer to earn money. Additionally, I train as much as possible all summer to prepare for tryouts.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Rankin: You have to lift your teammates up when they make mistakes because it’s a team effort and we all have to support each other.

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?

Rankin: I have learned a lot about leadership and how to give 100% effort!

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Rankin: If I make a mistake I take a deep breath and tell myself I’ll get it next time. I try not to get too down on myself and get into my head.
