Woodgrove dominates Clover Hill, 9-0, in VHSL Class 5 State Quarterfinals

PURCELLVILLE, Va. — Woodgrove Softball (24-2) defeated Clover Hill (18-4) in the Virginia Class 5 State Quarterfinals 9-0. Sophomore, Abbey Lane went the distance over 7 complete innings. Lane gave up 3 hits and only 1 walk while striking out 10. The Woodgrove defense was flawless behind Lane to help shut down Clover Hill.

Woodgrove took advantage of several walks and 4 errors on the Clover Hill defense to score 6 runs in the 1st inning. Junior Catcher, Wynn Drenning had a 2 RBI double in the inning. Woodgrove added 2 more runs in the 4th inning when Abbey Lane singled with one out. With two outs, Virginia Tech Commit, Junior 3rd baseman, Michelle Chatfield launched a homerun to left field. Virginia Tech Commit, Junior Shortstop Anni Rohs followed Chatfield with a single but was left on base when Senior Left Fielder, Morgan Whetsell’s rocket to left center was caught by the Clover Hill center fielder.

The Wolverines added their ninth run in the bottom of the 6th when Junior Outfielder, Alaina Santoli hit an inside the park homerun to right field.

Junior Kayla Pilson had a hit in the 3rd inning joining Drenning, Lane, Chatfield, Rohs and Santoli who all tallied one hit each on the day.

Woodgrove will take on Hickory in the Virginia Class 5 State Semifinal game on Friday, June 10th at Riverside High School, time TBA.
