Woodgrove slid to victory in VHSL Region 5D Semifinal, state quarterfinals next

PURCELLVILLE, Va. — Woodgrove Softball (23-2) defeated Stone Bridge Friday night in the Virginia Region 5D Finals, 3-0. Sophomore, Abbey Lane went toe to toe against NC State Commit, Junior Kayla Fekel pitching a no-hitter over 7 complete innings. Lane gave up only 1 walk and fanning 8 batters. Fekel also striking out 8 batters, gave up 5 hits and no walks in the loss for Stone Bridge.

The offense for Woodgrove got started in the 4th inning with a squeeze bunt from Virginia Tech Commit, Junior Shortstop Anni Rohs that turned into her making it all the way around the bases and scoring due to her smart and aggressive base running taking advantage of both an obstruction call and a throwing error on Stone Bridge. Woodgrove added another run in the 5th after a gritty 9 pitch at bat by Junior Catcher, Wynn Drenning who reached base on another Stone Bridge error. With two outs, Abbey Lane hit a double scoring pinch runner Freshman, Erynn Thompson from second.

In the bottom of the 6th the Wolverines addded their third and final run of the game when Virginia Tech Commit, Junior 3rd Baseman Michelle Chatfield started the inning with a double. After advancing to 3rd on a wild pitch, Senior Left Fielder, Morgan Whetsell laid down a beautiful bunt single that scored Chatfield.

The Woodgrove defense was again spectacular behind Lane with no errors. The Wolverines will face Clover Hill in the State Quarterfinals on Tuesday, June 7th at 6PM at Woodgrove High School.
